Davenport, Iowa Architecture, October 2002

I spent five days in the City of Davenport, Iowa in October,2002. I went to Davenport from California to meet up with my sister Kathy and her hubby Dave and take a driving trip to southern Indiana. (See separate gallery.) After returning from the Indiana trip and visiting the riverboat gambling establishments, I spent some time exploring Davenport neighborhoods and the residential architecture. I have been to Davenport many times since leaving my home town of Clinton, Iowa over thirty years ago. I decided to capture images of some of the city's historical dwellings. Most of the residential homes in this city of 100,000 people were built prior to World War II. Many of them were built in the 1800's. Davenport was incorporated in 1839 and was at one time a very wealthy city due to the timber and farming industries. It was also a major port on the Mississippi river. The successful business people built grand homes over the years, many of them on hills overlooking the Mississippi river. Since there are so many significant structures, I focused on a few example homes in four sections of the city, all within a close distance to the river. Some of the areas on the West Side and East Side are slightly run down and are being rejuvenated. The Prospect Park and McClellan Heights are very upscale. Home prices are very affordable by California standards.
