Lou's Trip To Cancun, April 2002

I left California on 4/8/02 to visit my friend Steve Martin aboard his sailboat. Steve was anchored at the small island of Isla Mujeres eight miles offshore from Cancun Mexico. Adam Burkot, a cruising friend of Steve's, was anchored nearby. Adam's daughter,Eva and grand daughter, Alyshka were visiting him from the Czech Republic. We had a great time with them during my visit. We spent the first few days relaxing, swimming in the warm turquoise water and hanging out in the town. During the evenings Steve and I played guitars and sang songs with other boaters. On Wednesday Steve, Eva, Alyshka and I left on a trip into the jungle to see the Mayan ruins. We first went to a timeshare presentation at one of the big hotels to get discount on car rental and a free brunch. It was a high pressure presentation and we were glad to escape into the jungle. We drove to Chichen Itza the largest of the Mayan ruins three hours west of Cancun. The temples were built around 800 AD. We spent several hours at the ruins and climbed all over the pyramids. We then drove to a small village west of the pyramids to find lodging for the night. We stayed in two small adobe huts with thatched roofs which were primitive but clean. After settling in we had dinner in a small cafe where we were the only customers. Halfway through dinner a torrential rainstorm started and all the lights in the city went out. We finished dinner by candlelight and spent the rest of the evening playing a Czech card game that used tarot cards. Thursday morning we drove North to a Mayan Cave. It had some water in it and had many rooms which contained Mayan artifacts. We then drove to the ruins at Ekbalam which was built in the 15th century. We spent that night at Rio Lagarto famous for its crocodiles and pink flamingos. Friday we headed back to Cancun, got lost and almost ran out of gas. When we reached Cancun we swam at the beach before taking the ferry back to the island. I went on two scuba dives Saturday and saw dolphin while diving. It was a great trip!
