Stocking up for the Weekend

Times are tough for Irish publicans, especially those outside the big towns and the tourist areas.
Changing times mean that the pub is no longer at the heart of the community although it is still a major attraction for tourists.
Most publicans consider themselves lucky if they get one good night's trade at the weekend. In a bid to survive, many pubs are more akin to restaurants than the traditional bar of old.
A combination of people having less money to spend and cheap drink in supermarkets means that people are more inclined to drink at home, even if, as in the case of the younger generation, they go to a nightclub afterwards.

You are a very good journalist and your great photos always have a story attached.
This one is sad but hopefully many Pubs will survive when the economy picks up again. V!

A great image Mairead, love how the guy looks as he walks away from the ub

Pubs have never had much of an appeal for me, but it's always (well, ALMOST always) sad to see businesses not doing well. The legitimate ones serve a function and keep the money flowing. This one is very different from an Australian pub, which generally tends to be more "open" but that's doubtless due to the difference in the standard weather. I like the tight crop to keep the focus on the building, and the guy seeming to walk away from it as a metaphor.

Nicely framed! Always sad to see traditions fade away.

pubs here have priced themselves out of the market too..the glut of home entertainment options must also take a toll on punter traffic..regrettable the decline of these community nodes...a drop of the Tyrconnell (there`s a bottle in the kitchen) alone would get me in the door, and a pint of plain would not go amiss either...V

It's a sad story, heard in many places nowadays.

Save some for me.:) A terrific point of view. Love the 'quiet' colors and the graphics (with the circular kegs, rectangular bricks/windows and the lines on the street mirroring the lines of the curb and of the building). The man crossing adds a fine element of interest.

It is sad that times are changing and old social customs are disappearing. I would guess that, in the long run, people will drink more alcohol at home than they did in the pubs (after all it is cheaper, home does not close and you don't have to be concerned about driving). The pubs, as a social meeting place will largely disappear. So sad. V

Very nice candid image with these details and the kegs stacked against the wall. I'd go there, but it would have to be withing walking distance. "V"

Sounds like a sad story. Big international companies (supermarkets, etc) leave nothing for the smaller business and are very bad for local communities! Good shot to illustrate this problem.

So sad to hear that the pub culture is a dying one. This is a wonderful photo of this gentleman getting ready for his weekend business. Love the kegs piled up. V.

Lovely image Mairead. It's such a shame to see old traditions changing due to economic reasons; hopefully they won't disappear altogether!

I'd be happy with that little stock for the weekend - well at least part of it.
