Spent most of the day in the Circuit Criminal Court today (as a reporter, I'd best
add). It's a depressing place. There's a saying in the business that all human life
is to be found in the court. It's true but it's not the side of human life that we
like to think about. Almost everyone is a victim. There's the victim of crimes,
those who have been assaulted, abused, robbed, frightened, scared. There's
those who have committed the crimes but often they are victims too. Victims
of family breakdown and broken homes, victims of neglect and bullying, victims
of bad education, of poverty and unemployment, victims of drug abuse,
victims of the inequalities of society which mean that some people seem not to
get a chance from the day they are born.
