The Silent Valley lies in the heart of the Mourne Mountains.
The reservoir which supplies water to Belfast city and most of
Co Down was constructed between 1923 and 1933. A
thousand men worked on the project and nine lost
their lives.
Nowadays it is also a major tourist attraction with over
50,000 people visiting it each year.

Amazing - this hole looks a bit out of this world, like in a science fiction film. Uschi (V)

Superb compo and lighting Mairead! Besides the Ladyblower pics that our British friends shot a couple weeks ago, I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like this. Very interesting! BV

an engaging scene...the flooded valley a contrast to the barren slopes of the Mournes....the vortex so apparent..and an extra tingle from the wind on the water...V

I like this; the way the walls of the reservoir lead the eye in, and also the hill in the background seems to oppose the circular hole in the foreground as if someone's pulled out a giant pointed plug. (OK, a little imagination is needed.)

So many lives were lost during the construction of so many things we take for granted today.
But it is a lovely shot - all the reservoirs near me are totally man made and surrounded by huge embankments.
