Buttons

This collection of buttons was started by my mother and many of the
buttons belonged to garments she wore before I was even born.
I guess she saved old buttons so that they could be re-used as she
often made her own clothes (and later mine) and knitted. It's a habit
I've kept even though, as my husband will testify, I'm not too
diligent a sewing on lost buttons!

How nostalgic! My grandmother and mother saved buttons and so do I. This is a very nice shot, with great composition.

This is refreshing my mind as my mother would do the same she would say you never know when you would need a button.Very nice Mairead.

I have quite a collection myself and I can't remember the last time I sewed on a button. Old habits die hard!

My granny always had a jar like that, I suspect my mam still has them.

Agree with the others' sentiments here - we should embrace the care and slower-paced-ness that sewing buttons back on demands. Being a single bloke though, I'm just waiting until my daughter has mastered the art of sewing; then I present her with a great pile of shirts and their missing buttons!! :o)

As you were hunting around the house for something to photograph, I can just imagine your eyes lighting up at the sight of these. Delightfully presented!

We don't mend, darn or knit anymore ..... these contemplative activities are really missing from our lives. Instead we exploit third world people, who have come to rely on the pittance they are paid ...... and get clothes that end up in second hand stores after a few wears! I love button jars, old sewing kits and someone even mentioned the toadstool contraption! Your shot brings all of these things to mind .... well done. A great concept!

My aunt was a tailoress & she made trousers for her 11 brothers...she gave me a collection of men's trouser buttons when I was first married & I still have many of them :)

What a treasure! I also have a tin of buttons that has contributions from my grandmother. Sometimes it's these little things that really count.

I knew somebody would do one of these. :)

I think we all collect buttons , we know we may never use them, but we still collect them, they must have something special!! Beautiful capture Mairead!

Ah, this brings back memories . I used to love looking in my mums button tin, always had to ask permission first. She had some beauties.
Fay Stout02-Apr-2010 22:14
I can relate to this. I have a jar of buttons but I never seem to use them for anything, yet I sure don't want to throw them away... just in case they are needed. Some of the old buttons were so beautiful. Nicely composed and great colors...
routerer02-Apr-2010 21:46
Every mother had a button tin and also a collection of zips too.
We don't keep or clothes long enough to have a button fall off now, hey...when did you last darn a sock Mairead.?
Did your mother have one of those toadstool contraptions for darning socks.??
You're now thinking...no ...my mother used a needle...........aaah...well.
