The Total Package

This is a picture of the final installation showing the ARS-4 regulator, which replaced an ARS-2 and the Leece-Neville alternator.

*WARNING: We now know that installing a regulator in the engine compartment is NOT advised by Balmar. This particular regulator failed in less than three months. Balmar suggested the heat killed it. The second one also fried, and the third was moved outside the engine compartment and is likely still going.
Keep in mind that this install was done over 12 years ago back before we really knew about the heat issues with the potting epoxy on Balmar regulators.

I highly suggest calling Ron at Ronís Auto Electric (207)-549-5918 if you canít find a competent Leece-Neville dealer. He may ask you to send your old alternator in so he can match it up with a new one but with this article you should have the part number you need to order it from him, if your original alternator is a Motorola and you're installing it on a Universal M-25. I believe he will ship just about anywhere but I would call him to make sure.

The Leece-Neville model number for the external regulation plate cover is 114-307 & Ron stocks them.

Looking at the location of your regulator, it isn't surprising that you've had multiple failures. As evident in the photograph, the regulator exists in a pocket where superheated air is not able to escape. That poor component is being tortured. No microprocessor is going to survive long under that type of abuse. By simply moving the regulator lower in the engine box, or outside the compartment, you could have easily avoided that issue. I suppose it's easier to blame Balmar, than acknowledge your own bad planning.

Just a thought, but maybe your regs kept failing because they are mounted inside the engine space. I mounted outside on the bulkhead were it is much cooler and never had any issues. Balmar mentions "cool and dry" location for the reg.

thanks for your post. I have a Universal 25 in my Newport and have the exact same alternator. I just put in the Balmar BUT had one problem: you must have had a wire to the brown ignition wire on the Balmar that shows B+ when the ignition is on. My set-up had that wire go to the tach (don't know why it worked using the original regulator) .. so i had to move it to an ignition output, and now i have no tach. Did you wire the AC post from the alternator right to the tach, or did you run it through the Balmar?
