I'm installing A/C. The supplier said that a scoop strainer is important to maintain a prime in the cooling water pump. He recommends a scoop with small holes rather than elongated slots. He says that you don't need an inside strainer with such a scoop. Groco makes one with such holes and a cleanout gate immediately under the thru hull. I'm going with this.

Great examples of poorly maintained external strainers. They obviously were not serviced (removed, cleaned, painted, reassembled) when the bottoms were painted. Not a reason not to have one. When you suck up a plastic bag or a wad of seaweed that does not make it to your internal sea strainer, you will understand. I took my external strainer off and regretted it. They DO need maintenance. This is about the only think I disagree with in the advice on this website. Had an external strainer for 20 years with no problem. Went without, and had problems with sea grass and weeds. In a perfect world you would not need one. The world is not perfect.

precisely why I removed mine and just have a regular seacock.
