Donkey (Geoffrey T. Bell)

Author Comment:

Some background on the picture. I was on Santorini Greece one day during my honeymoon. You anchor off the coast and take a tender to the harbor. To get from the harbor to Fira you need to take a gondola up the 800' cliff that the town is built upon. Your only other option is to walk up a winding road that clings to the cliff side. For those who are lazy, you can hire a donkey to carry you up the road as well.

It was late in the day and the gondola had a huge line for it, so we decided to walk down the narrow road to the harbor. It was amazingly hot outside with no breeze what-so-ever. As we were going down the road, we passed by hundreds of donkeys taking people up and down the tight, slippery, and sometimes steep road. Did I mention it was hot? When we go to the bottom I saw this one donkey, resting in the shade with his head against a door. He looked so sad and worn out, just trying to get some reprieve from the heat and the toil of his dreary life. I took only one picture, but I think that I captured his emotions well. The donkeys face is quite expressive.

The more I look at this picture, the more my heart goes out to this poor little guy.

I'd have liked the person who took this photograph to have told us that he somehow tried making the donkey's life a bit better that day; this photo just leaves us with a sense of misery and futility.

I cried when I saw this picture. I've been there too and was shocked at how bad the poor donkeys were treated. I'm glad to see that an organisation called The Donkey Sanctuary is taking a stance against this.
