This is superb duck gallery. Your pictures are absolutely awesome! I've spent hours online looking at/for duck photos and have never found such an excellent duck photo site. My husband and I do taxidermy in the states and I was on the Taxidermy.net forum when someone passed along your link. EXCELLENT! EVERY SINGLE PICTURE! Thanks so much for sharing your time, talent and photos. I'm going to show my husband tomorrow. I hope you continue to take more duck/wildlife photos and post them. Lors d'une randonnée dans les marais du Nord, nous avons eu le plaisir de voir l'artiste se faire la main (ou la lentille) sur un geai bleu fort coopérant (et très intéressé par les cacahuètes).....ce qui nous a permis de découvrir ce foisonnement de canards dans tous leurs états.
Bravo pour ce magnifique résultat. Il y a de superbes photos.

Hi Dan:

I agree with you that the pics should be larger, and they used to be. I used to have them at 8" in height at one time a couple of years ago. Regretfully, I had to change this policy and reduce them to 4" in height. My wife is a nature artist and uses my pics as models. As you probably know, artists (and we photigraphers) can get pretty touchy with issues of copyright. We had a couple of incidents of "theft" of my images off my gallery by local artists - therefore we decided to reduce the size viewable to the general public :-(

Wow! These are some really terrific shots of mallards! The colors and textures of the drakes were so rich and detailed. You did such a wonderful job on Mallards that I would like to see some other species like teal, redheads, wood ducks, pintails, canvasbacks, etc. Other than that, these are bar-none the best close-up shots of in-flight ducks that I have ever seen. I'm not sure if the U.S. Federal Duck Stamp contest allows for photo entries alongside the artwork, but if they do it would be worth your time to send them some of your images. I believe the winner receives one million dollars.

Just curious as to what aperture and shutter speed you use to freeze the fast beating wings of ducks. I know mallards have a slower wing beat than say teals do but (as a sports photographer) I would guess you were using a 4.0 ap and 1:1000 shutter with a 100-200 speed (on a bright, clear day). Anyway, your input would be appreciated.

Wow... I don't think I need to tell you that these are fantastic. I'll put my camera back into the bag in the future when I'm about to photograph a duck or duckling. It's not worth even trying to get as cool photos as these. I'll just go back to this gallery instead and look. I don't need photos of my own...

Seeing this gallery makes me shutter. The photo quality is excellent, of course, and I congratulate you on that, but one can only handle so many Mallards. After 10 pages they all just look the same. Whoa. There are maybe 30 species of waterfowl readily photographable in this part of the world, why not mix it up a little? Cheers-

You have some beautiful photography of mallards. I was in search of an answer. I had 2 ducks land in the trees in my backyard yesterday. I'm pretty certain it was mallard ducks but I didn't think they would land in trees. I use to live on a lake that had many mallards. I never saw any in the trees before. Is this possible I wonder?

I have been taking photos for almost 3 years now however would still consider my self a novice. Can you give me any advice on taking photos of birds in action? They always fly away, and also, if I want to get in really close, the camera shake at 300mm makes them blur.

Lovely Photos. Pity I was not able to see the Exif data. I see lots of Ducks,Swans Gulls etc and would have loved to photograph them, but have no idea of settings and so have given up before I begin. Perhaps one day I will find the data I am looking for.

I've always failed to get good images of ducks lifting off or landing -- figured it was difficult to do well. Now I see multiple pages of beautifully photographed ducks in various positions of flight and landing -- proving my theory that it IS difficult to do well, AND that a talented and tenacious photographer CAN succeed when willing to do the work.... I gotta go find a duck pond! Thanks for sharing the fruits of your labors!

Thanks for your message. Its great to have my head inflated.

I use an Olympus E-10 digital camera.
The pics vary from the use of the camera's primary lens (35-140mm), at times the TCON 14B 1.4 X teleconverter,
the TCON 300 3 X teleconverter ( which gives me 420mm), and rarely the combination of whole kit together
(TCON 14B and TCON 300) which gives me a total of 610mm with a pretty fast F2.8!
E-10 users call this the Super Combo.

I don't use any filters, apart from a Haze 1 filer on my primary lens to protect it
(which I remove when adding the teleconverters).
But, I do apply basic post-processing in Photoshop; levels, contrast, reduction of a bit of red, sharpening -
that sort of thing.

I reduce the pics to about 8 inches in height and set resolution to 72ppi
for monitor viewing and to save on server space.
