The Wall

We used to "shag" baseballs here. When 11 years old and with no baseball we risked a bloody nose from the big kids(14-15 year olds) the semi-pro teams hired to retrieve the foul balls. We'd wait on our bikes for one to come over the wall..grab it...knowing a big kid in a white tee shirt would soon be around the corner, coming full speed....and if he caught you, he not only got the baseball back...You got a black eye, or a bloody lip. If we got one to replace our skinless...thready excuse...we were all set, most times playing all day long and even skipping lunch, until someone knocked the ball into the weeds where it couldn't be found. Then we'd be down at this wall again, since we seldom had money...and once the ball flew over the wall...it belonged to anyone who could get it...to everyone's knowledge. It was great fun.

Laffin', sounds like us. We'd use a ball until the leather was gone and the cord unwrapped!
But we'd search for cola bottles to get a new one. And if we were lucky, we could get to the store before we were caught. Guess all younger kids had to watch out for the older ones. :)
