Minolta X700 Manual Focus

These cameras worked very well, they would work with the 280px flash and some others for correctly exposing a scene, if you used a Minolta (or compatable MD lenses). They had an internal program mode, or you could use aperature or shutter priority...This one, and according to my camera repair guy, many of the X700's had a shutter button problem. The trouble was the part that gave the problem was way down inside the camera...and the only supplier you could buy it from was Minolta(who never changed the design). Basically the camera had to be rebuilt to fix this. I fixed it once, but at 110.00 for a part that WILL go out again, this camera is now inoperable...and unless I become independently wealthy (fat chance) will remain so. 04/25/07.. Some of what went wrong I think now, was my own fault (unknowingly). These camera like digital, have sensitive electronics inside...and I used a flash with very high trigger voltage with it...which led to it's temporary demise. I think now that I know what I've done wrong may someday get it fixed...was a great camera when it used to work.

Love coming back through this gallery.
Rick's comment shows how one bad design can turn someone away from every product a maker produces. Not long ago, Barb on Am3, had a shutter button go out on her Sony DSLR. She said if she hadn't invested in lenses already, she'd change to Canon. I've been lucky with Canon so far, but both them & Nikon have both had their problems over the years too. I remember a couple of recalls Canon had with their DSLR's. Things happen, and nobody's perfect a 100% of the time, eh.

I transitioned from a circa 1974 Minolta SRT 102 to the x-700 in the early 90's. It lasted about three years until (you won't guess)... the shutter failed. Nikon was the beneficiary of this failure...

Hi Tom
Yeah this was a nice camera when it worked. First camera I ever had with a "p" mode. Too bad about the shutter button contact problem with them. I bet there are people who have them for 10-15 years and never had a problem, but then again vice versa. The camera repair shop told me it may fail again, and it did about a year and 1/2 later.

I'd wondered about these years ago. I'd stopped using them by then tho'. I had the big guy with the interchangable heads, ah.. can't recall the model (XR or something). It was a fantastic work horse tho', but a lot bigger than the SRT series. But it was real small compared to my RB7 Mamiya, lol. Now that WAS a tank!
