Roslyn Wash.

This Ghost Town is now making a " Come Back" from the dead thanks to the T.V. Series, " Northern Exposure" about an Alaskan Town which was really filmed in Roslyn. Roslyn was a coal mining town sarted in the mid 1880's and has the oldest operated saloon in the state ( The Brick) which still has the old " Spittune" on floor in front of bar. Hundreds of miners lost their lives here and now a nice memorial is built in their honor. Most the building are without change and you really do get the fell of a town out of the old west. The locals here are hardy with a bit of a cross between late 60's hippie movement and John Wayne Cowboy mix which makes for some wonderful and colorful locals... This is a great town with great people!!!

In responce to Toni, she is way off base. First of all Patrick's #9 was up in Ronald, noware near Roslyn or Cle Elum so filling it with water would be stupid. My grand dad worked there untill it closed and there were no orientals in town, many other great ethnic groups though. There is much history there and she should get her facts straight before talking stupid.

I used to live in Cle Ellum many years ago, and had the opportunity to know a few of the old coal miners personally.
There was a couple of old fellas that told me an old story I would never hear in the history books.
It was a story about the dark side of the coal miners when the old number 9 mine closed down.
It was the biggest of the mines, and I believe it was the last one to close.

I feel it is safe to tell the story, because I believe the last of them to be gone now.

He told me of how when they closed the mine, there were many chinese miners and their families.
Cle Ellum was to be a ghost town, and jobs were very scarce then. The people were in a panic.

He said they mobbed together and gathered all the chinese workers, and their families.
Then the angry miners threw all the chinese and families, along with all the old mining equipment into the mine.
Then they filled the mine with water, so the town of rosalyn, and Cle Ellum would not sink.
A horrible story, but from a very old reliable source.

Be sure to check out the cemetery in Roslyn if you go there. It's actually something like 26 or 29 separate cemeteries, all on a few hills just on the other side of town. There's the brewery (Roslyn dark ale...love it!) and many sites used in the movie The Runner Stumbles as well as Northern Exposure. There are flyers listing many of the sites available at City Hall and probably the gift shop, which is pretty much the only store left that sells No Ex memorabilia. (I lived in Rolsyn for several years and in the area around there, as well as Cle Elum and was lucky enough to be an extra in the show several times, as were two of my sons.) great times, great memories, great townsfolk!

I got to know some very kind and wonderful people wich I bear in good memorys and I know one of them has tragicaly past away now. I will never forget you, Harry Balmer! I absolutely love Roslyn! I consider myself a local even though i don't live there year round. I've been coming to Roslyn since i was 4, i'm almost 20 now and nothing has changed (significantly) and that's the way i like it!

This is fantastic especially the Roslyn Theatre. I've been there and I just love all the care that has been put into it. A real friendly place, oh yeah.

I was told that the brick is for sale for several million dollars, and that most of the homes, many in poor condition, are selling for several hundred thousand dollars. yes, it is making a comeback and will forever change into the big city life. Enjoyed the gallery.
