Natives Of The Pacific Northwest And Their Legecy

The Natives we removed from this land left but few traces of history. These were proud people who lived here for hundreds of years in harmony with the land. It only took us a little over 200 years to mess it up with a trophy house on every bluff and a pavement ribbon to every hill. What we did to the Native Americans was flat wrong and we lied to them in every manner. We killed off their food supply and brought them small pox and alcohol. Most of my photos were taken at the Cashmere Washington Pioneer Museum. ( 509-782-3230) Please stop in and support these folks as they have once of the best Native Amercian collects anywhere.

I am the Great Granddaughter of Chief Joseph, he was the Chief of the NezPerce. MY father's name was Raymond Campbell Smeaton . His mother was Mary M.Wright.Daughter of Chief Joseph. . She had a sister Laura Wright, brother Madessa (Dee) Wright and another sister. My father was very proud of his heritage . HIs mother Mary M. brought the headress of her father ( Chief Joseph ) to my father in the 40.s. I recall the extermely long length was loaded with eagle feathers on each side.He must have been very tall. My father was gifted a deed to land in Oklaholma. My father later on in Detroit or Ypsilanti, Michigan my father was beaten and the deed stolen from him. You are right it is very difficult to live in our world. I am letting you know that this can confirm what was being done to American Indians. I am so happy that Monte Dodge had taken the time to share with all of us the wonderful Information and Pics. Great photos, I stumbled onto this site (I'm a Shaman, I don't really stumble onto anything, I am directed)looking to see if Yellow Wolf had gotten more than a fieldstone headstone as in the 30's. I'm planning on spending 4 days next month at the Joseph's band beloved homeland, Wallowa Or. for the Tamkaliks celebration again this year. Instead of coming rite back to Montana I plan to stop at Joseph's and Yellow Wolf's graves to place some special offerings I made. Your pictures will be of help for this, Wado.

I wish that we could go back and change history for the better, it was horrible what not only the gov't did, but whites, spaniards,etc were as guilty due to feeling superior to all other peoples. We are all created equal!!! We could have learned so much had we only taken things serious, and listened to those who knew more of this country, its goings on and the people who live upon it.Thank you for sharing with the world. Beautiful photos. Thank you. Isabel Arcasa is my grandmother. Her youngest daughter, Maybelle LaCourse/Gendron is my mother. My grandmother is the granddaughter of Shilhohsasket of Entiat, the daughter of Herman Friedlander(non-Indian) and Elizabeth (daughter of Shilhohsasket). Many of the young people whose graves you have pictured grew up around my home with my children. Again, thank you for honoring them.

Great Photos!!!!!!!!!! I would like to see more. When I was born in 1940, my family lived in Nespelem very close to the grave of the great Indian Chief of the Nez Pierce, CHIEF JOSEPH. I am presently writing an article for the STAR newspaper located in Grand Coulee, Washington called "OUR LIVES,BEFORE THE DAM". The photo's and some of the great positive comments by some of the readers are very nice. Those opposing the photo's and their negetive comments show how ignorant they are of the real truth of how the government of the United States has treated the native americans. It really makes me want to portray the real and actual affects that the building of the Grand Coulee Dam on the Columbia River had on the tribes that lived on the shores of the river. I would really appreciate feed back from native elders and historians of the Colville Confederated Tribes to assist me in writing a true and factual article.

This site has the headstone for Rachel Leigh Pakootas, my younger sister, Charlene Bearcub and the headstone for my son, Terry Allan Swan, these two are first cousins and it's so-o appropriate to see them linked side by side. I saw our grandfather, Chief Moses and his wife Mary Moses. I am the daughter of Matilda Socula Bearcub and we are direct descendents of Chief Moses Band. It does my heart good to see these pictures. Uncle Billy Curlew was the last traditional chief of our band and my mother, Matilda Bearcub, her sister Christine Socula Comedown and Margaret Thompson Piatote were his neices. I remember going to visit him and him being bed-ridden, petting me and my sister Charlene's head when he was still alive. Great memories for me. Thank you for this site and all the photos. I Can Safely Say We Were A "Bad" Thing For The Natives Of This Land Who Lived For Hundreds And Maybe Thousands Of Years Here Before We Shoved Them On Reservations And Put A Huge 5,000 sq. ft. house on every knoll in their former stomping grounds. In a hundred 100 years or there abouts we have ruined much of their old huntings grounds. A quick look only as far as the Puget Sound area will show what can happen to9 a very nice area turned to pavement for profit....

Just an observation, not a statement of right or wrong. The way of life of humans and all living creatures is survival of the fittest. It has always been that way. Dinosaurs have long gone, many species are going now. Adapt and survive, stagnate and die. Now it has changed, for better or worse. Some people have decided to play God. They want to choose which animals live or die, they want to manipulate the world, to make it their own playground. They want to stop all change at this point in time. Is breeding dilution of an Indian tribe really so bad. Perhaps it will make a better, stronger kind of American. How pure are native Indian tribes. Did they originate from a mixture of other tribes long ago. How many nations, tribes, countries did it take to make America. Was the result good or bad. I wish I could travel forward to the end of time to see what the outcome will be. Sadly I can only guess.

Thank you, Monte. A few days ago, I went back to Nespelem, and it seemed even sadder and more lost then I remembered it. Took the children to see the graves. The anomymity of all those children in the earth--and on Yellow Wolf's stone, Iraq medals. I felt such a mixture of pride, sadness, fury and admiration. What men they were, Joseph and Yellow Wolf. How their bravery should humble us.

Read a book a while back called 'Bury my heart at wounded knee'a sad catalogue of broken promises and abuse by the governments of the time,to a noble,dignified and long suffering people...broke my heart to read it,but glad i did..and written by a white man to.Do the schools in America tell the truth to the kids there about how the west was realy won..?
