Old Govan School House ( Built In 1906)

Govan , Washington

This school house was built in 1906 and closed in 1942. Govan ghost town was named after a Railroad Engineer named Van who every called Go-Van was he always ran this train too fast. This old " Clap Board " shcool house was one of the nicer ones built in it's day.

It's a shame to see this building slowly waste away

It really is a beautiful building, far more ornate than most of the structures you see in ghost towns. Thanks for sharing the pic and the story.

I've made 2 stops by the old Govan schoolhouse in the last couple of months (summer of '07), to take photos, and just to admire it. It is a beautiful old building but so sad to see it falling to bits. Isn't there any way a group could be organized to chip in to at least keep it from deteriorating any further? I realize a complete restoration would be impractical, astronomically expensive, and might even cause the building to lose its "character", but maybe try to do something like they've done in Bodie, California?....to keep it in a state of "arrested decay". Might be great for tourism in the area to preserve and cherish its history.

Wonderful architecture as for school, good enough for a church or mansion house. Fantastic find and story, Monte.
