Want to see that Kamplite really blow others away? Use the proper mantle. These were designed for a mantle about twice as big as a Coleman #21.
The single model uses the same generator as their double model, so is moving a LOT of fuel most likely being burnt off as a useless ghost flame.
Try the Peerless 24-A mantle on it. Peerless 2C-HG mantles are excellent mantles to use in place of Coleman #21s. Brighter, stronger, last longer.

How 'bout the old phoebus stoves, msr tunnel tent with sewn in liner and packing peanuts that acted as spacers and 3 hoop poles you placed inside, or SD octodome where you crawled thru an arch. yakpacks,jansport dome tents, msr white metal pan snowshoes, bernzamatic lamp/lanterns that ran off of those surplus military phone/walkietalkie batteries size and weight of a brick? Nike lavadomes and ? and? boots. Galibier boots? Helly hansen first addition 3 layer yellow gortex parka and bibs I still use (no delamination yet, I just DWR) Mouse Products , Bristlecone sl bags, When twinpeaks made sd and northface sl bags? Just picked up a 1965 Gerry Yearound Two Man tent in mint condition. My son and I will use it this year as we backpack the Pennine Way in Northumberland, England. Can you tell me anything about it? Very nice. I still wear my Raichle Rotundos (late 70's or thereabouts). I'll have to pull out the old crampons and wooden ice axes. I know I have a well-used Optimus 8R and a couple of other old stoves. I worked at REI when it had 2 stores, the walk-up in downtown Seattle and the "flagship" store on 11th and Pike. Down to the garage to look through the old stuff.

I have a metal container with a well fitting lid. It measures 9" tall x 7" wide by 4" deep and the legend on the back says it is a "portable refrigerator" and has instructions for use with 2 pictures. 1 of hunters the other is a beach scene both show coolers and the graphics appear to be about 1950. The container has a grey background with black and white raindrops. This is apparently an insert for the cooler that ice is kept in to keep food cool, there is also a caution on the lower part of the container that says it has been treated with a rust inhibitor, and says do not store unwrapped food or drinks in it. Any help would be appreciated.

came across a JC Higgins Sears model 710-740-40 camp stove today. no rust, just a lot of scorching, so it needs a paint job. does anyone know where to get a replacement JC Higgins decal that goes on the inside lid? this one is in great shape, but if i want to do the paint job right, i need to replace it. any parts source will be appreciated too! thanks for the nice site, lots of vintage stuff here. makes me want more than i already have!!

Yessss! Goodies from the Golden Age of camping gear!!! Pleased to have run across this website. It is wonderful justification for my collection of stoves, lanterns, tents, packs, cook kits, fuel flasks, boots, sleeping bags, and other doo-dads, from Coleman (of course!), Primus, Svea, Trangia, EMS, Early Winters, Kelty, Eureka, Yak Pak, Twin Peaks, North Face, REI, Fabiano, Raichle, Highland Outfitters (a hole-in-the-wall Riverside institution back in the day), and so on. Some bought new, some from yard sales. I even have my REI membership from about 1968. Most will go to offspring of my brother and me. Or their grandkids, when they come and when they reach the age when they can join me on some adventure.

Of course, justification covers a multitude of hobbies and vices: a ham radio buddy of mine told me that my wife's collection of stamping and scrap booking stock and equipment is also justification for ham radio. Besides, amateur radio field days are simply excuses for a camp out. But my wife is also understanding; in 2002, she convinced me to take the offer to buy a stock, mint 1960 Jeep from the original owner, then 92 years of age. I remember toodling about in it during high school days. I called his son in Portland and got his OK, so... Anyhow, finding all you kindred spirits is tonic for this bald guy's spirits. A happy and blessed Thanksgiving to all!

Monte, I just acquired what looks like a 1945 Aladdin Mountain Stove. It has US M-1942-MOD, PW 1 45 stamped on it but no Aladdin. For curiosty, I would like to see if it works. The operating instructions are 99.9% worn off and I have no clue as to what fuel to use. Heck, I dont even know if it will pressurize. Could you pass on some info please? You're retro gear is great. I have started to acquire retro coolers and jugs, particularly clay lined jugs. I'm in Olympia, where exactly is Adenvoir?

Great collection! Saw my Eureka Timberline there....backpacked it in Europe 2 summers. I fired up my SVEA 105 stove this morning. It cam to me from a local man who attempted Everest and was an expedition Doc numerous times. I am taking it on our Mt. Shasta climb next week. Wow! What a great collection of old school hiking and climbing gear. I have the 111b, an REI hickory ice axe, the Optimus 8r, the Jansport Mountain Dome, and an REI Crestline Expedition tent used by the '75 K2 expedition. I bought it for $75 at an auction that Jim Whiiaker had to pay off the expedition's debts.

All of these things are still in good working order, except for the Crestiline, which is missing a pole.

Looking at these photos - I can hear the crunch of snow under foot, carrying my wood ice axe on my first summit attempt with my Dad. Thanks for taking me back to my childhood - this gallery actually brings tears to my eyes!

God I am old! I went to your site to see if I could find canisters for my Garcia Gaz camp stove. All of the equiptment on your site was the lastest and best equiptment out when I backbacked. I guess it has been longer than I care to remember.

Wanna hear something bizarre? I have a Jansport D3, and the plastic part at the top of the shoulder strap mysteriously came apart... while it was just sitting there in my garage.

Pretty Cool site. I love the retro stuff and they sure dont make the new stuff like the old do they? I was wondering if you had any idea Where i could purchase Hank Roberts type LP cannisters for the Coleman 5101 lantern..or how i could make an adapter for the same lantern. I have been searching hi and low but haven't really come up with anything. Any input would be great. Thanks.

Very nice collection and pics! I came across a Sears JC Higgins today and am doing a rebuild. Found your site because I didn't have any info. on the lantern. It's great collecting vintage stoves/lanterns and making them good again--plus they come in very handy camping, fishing, backingpacking, etc.

Monte ... they don't make them like they used to! I have a picture of me the day that I started section-hiking the PCT at the Monument by the US/MEX Border in 1994, wearing HEAVY lug-soled boots and a Kelty frame-type backpack. I finished in August 2006 ... wearing the same boots (re-soled a few times, but the same boots) and the same Kelty frame-type pack.

A lot of gems here. Seems that you keep them very well, and most of the items will still do their job as long as you've got the back to carry them. Interesting, well presented gallery.

nice site, very inspiring, I just bought 3 coleman stove for 20 $can, 2x421(425usa0 and 1x4M. bought 4 lanterns too. super stuff, god they knew how to make goofproof stuff that last! after 60yers, they all work great!

Great page, Monte. Thanks for the wonderful pics, which sent me reeling way back. My sooty Svea 123 and a battered Sigg fuel bottle are all that survived from my days in the hills....along with a pair of petrified Fabiano Montagne block boots. Much obliged.

Cool collection, Monte. I still have my two Svea (Optimus?) stoves, a North Face Unimog sleeping bag, a so-thin-it's-unusable Ensolite pad, a nylon-covered North Face open cell foam pad, and a few other items from the 1960s and 70s. My second pair of Raichle Rotondos just gave out last summer in Utah: the sole seam broke open on one of them (sad). Also have a pair of wingtip dress shoes that I had outfitted with Vibram soles back in 1968, possibly the first wingtips in Bellingham (and West Coast?) so configured. It's hard to let go of such treasures. Keep collecting!
