- INDIA 2004 - another try - Delhi, Agra and Rajasthan

In September 2004 I went to India. I visited Delhi, Agra and some cities in colorful Rajasthan. It was my second trip there - only two months after my first, very unlucky trip when my camera bag with all my valuable belongings including my all photo equipment, a notebook computer, money and passport were stolen on train to Agra... what a terrible experience.

This time I managed somehow to bring pictures and my camera back home, and now ... I have so many photos to share with you, I will be posting them regularly here.

Remember - there is also another face of India - rich and modern (and definitely less colorful ;) I did not have enough tme to explore the new India, most of my time I spend in the old parts of cities... maybe next time...

New and modren India is not true India ( same is true for Pakistan as I belong to Pakistan). New and modren subcontinent is composed of the minute fragement of our society who have jumped to the next class and want to forget the ones striving day and night to jump into their class (middle class) and both these classes (rich and middle) in their strive of dreams have completely forgotten the real Subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Srilanka) and the people who make real subcontinent. You have done very well to capture true India, this is the India I love too.

Looking at your photos brought back such fond memories of my trips there. Like you, I had a huge number of cameras, images, etc stolen (for me, in Peru), and it just breaks your heart. One thing we all can agree on about India: It is just about IMPOSSIBLE to walk down a street without seeing a dozen great photo opportunities. The women in so much color. And the men, with lined, expressive faces. Thanks for visually reminding all of us that India has SO much more to offer besides the rampant poverty that we read about in the newspapers. -Josh

This gallery is simply stunning. However, I'd like to ask a question. All your pictures are in landscape orientation, even the portrait ones that might work better in portrait orientation. this is a stunning gallery. every image is crisp. the compositions are beautiful, and the display comes through so well despite the medium format. is that your 17-40 mm lens or do you do some image processing before you post it? again, the sharpness of the images is great and adds a lot to their compositional appeal.

We went to Rajasthan in February 2005. It was pilgrimage to see the places my father had seen back in the 1920s. He loved India and it's people so much. Now we understand some of his feelings. Just one trouble ~ we took a tour with guides everywhere, saw lots of wonderful monuments but did not have the time or proper opportunity to really see the people "close up and personal" as you have done. Thanks for helping fill that gap for us. Wonderful pictures ~ but how did you get them without being pestered by beggars and urchins or feeling obliged to pay for each picture?

You DA Man! your album shows abundance of colors, characters and compositions. Funnily the abundance is easily available to anybody, anytime, and almost anywhere in India as any of your street picture would reveal. perhaps what sets you apart is little extra willingness to look, find and sometime ask them to make your portraits. Your ingredients here is a success formula for me to take note. Preserve more grey shades, include blast of colors, show human eyes, emotion for empathy and familiarity yet provide a perspective of remoteness whcih is natural and slightly processes it through the lens and ps. Another Try: Maciek, I am glad you returned to India after losing your gear. It is a great country to photograph. I have selected the following as my favourites, Udaipur, Agra the Taj and the portrait half of Kamala's Glance. The photos of people were great. Why not try to use your longer telephoto to get some candid shots of people about their daily business? So many of the shots were of people conscious of your lens. Relax a little more and do not be too anxious to get it all on you Compact Flash ASAP. You seemed to be in a bit of a rush.

What beautiful imagery. Thank you for sharing your vision. I found the criticism regarding your choice of subject (i.e., not the Taj Mahal) surprising. All are entitled to their due opinions, of course, but in my travels, I have always felt that a place is just a place, and the geography is seldomly as interesting as the people that inhabit it. Your lens captures this perfectly, and I thouroughly enjoyed your photos.

The photos are lovely,well shot & well composed,showing the colourful ethnic culture & everyday life of this diverse country.The backlanes, the closeups, the monuments all shot with utmost honesty & without pretence.Congrats,its refreshing to see these photographs of India as opposed to the ones showing trash & poverty, which some people often like to shoot, when attempting to show real India whereas these photos are the closest to being quite a real & honest picture portfolio of fascinating & colourful northern India.The south and all the other regions offer much more of the same.All the best.

Maciek, I took some time going through your extensive gallery of Indian pictures and they are wonderful. I think you do your best work in the close-ups of people's faces. Maybe you can consider subdividing this gallery in Portraits, Street Photography, etc. so that it is easier to watch, now is is fairly daunting to go through them all in one go!

Apparently you have quite an excellent camera. Your gallery ought to convince anyone debating whether or not to purchase the same. Equally excellent are your photo compositions and their technical aspects. I also hope you make it down to the South of India so we can enjoy even more colorful images. I wonder if you could elaborate on the theft on your previous trip. Obviously you recovered and I suppose upgraded your equipment.
