Thanks for taking such a wonderful set of pictures of my sisters in India. I'm a western transsexual woman - I pretty much consider Hijras like me though maybe I'm assuming a bit across cultures. I got lucky in that I had access to hormones since my early 20's and castration sometime around age 28 , and laser hair removal. It's suprising how little it takes to push things over the edge of genders.. I look very female and pretty now. Hopefully hormones and laser hair removal will become more available to everyone planetwide. Good FFS to change bone structure is still QUITE expensive.. I'm saving up till I'm thru school

I have to agree with the earlier comment from James. The photography itself is brilliant but the is .. at best. You had a very unique opportunity to show the strength and sorrow of these womens' lives. Instead of a portrait of their humanity we see these women them fixing the hair, putting on makeup, and going to beauty contests. The subject matter is at best uninteresting and at worst seeks to categorize them as Indian drag queens. "Karpagam on the doorstep" alone shows the opportunity you missed to really show a depth of soul. Look in her eyes and tell me you don't see a strength of spirit that at was strong enough to overcome such intense physical trappings and the sorrow she feels at having to live in a world that will punish her for it. You could have captured that but instead I see women putting on makeup. Technically it's beautiful work but the camera really did the people here a great disservice.

Hi, i don't want to sound negative and disregard your work. the intimacy of your relationship with these hijras comes out very clearly. they seem to trust you and have allowed you inroads into their most personal life. I cant help but feel you have misused or abused this trust in some way. i get the feeling that you use your camera in as a voyeuristic tool and this to me is what takes away from your intimate relationship. Please don't get me wrong. I am not saying that these photos have upset or hurt anyone feelings. but since you know them so well and seem to be so close to them a more humanist approach would have made the photos much more appealing to me. this 'objectifying' and 'compartmentalizing' seems crude and unnecessary. These photos are being seen by thousands of people and i would have liked you to have looked towards them as just ordinary human beings like you and me and everyone we think of as "NORMAL" . Your gaze should have a friendly one not that of a photographer who wants to make it big with some never before seen pictures. forgive me if i am being to harsh and to the point with my words. i have lots more on my mind about this and would love to have some correspondence with you. hope to hear from you, james tartar.james@gmail.com PS: i too have many close friends who are hijras.

All that these people ask for is acceptance, instead get resentment and beating sometimes, and unwillingly instill fear in the general public. Their lives are very difficult for no fault of theirs. Wow. There are some very sensitive, feeling images here. I really like how you've brought us into their world. I'd like to see more of this, even, more unguarded moments, a la Nan Goldin (not technically but emotionally) or Eugene Richards. But nonetheless you have your own style and a wonderful eye. Faves: "In the office," "Fixing hair," "Mirror," "Bringing the Light," "Collection," (with a very Webb out-of-focus FG hand), "Karpagam" and "Blessings." Rock on. This is exciting stuff.
