I first saw Maciej's photos on flickr and was instantly struck by the immense candour and honesty of his shots. I particularly love the photos of provincial Wales; these capture a humility and unexpected beauty. Maciej's work is consistently stunning and his work is art in it's purest form. I look forward to being influenced by Maciej's work again and again.

I was wondering what I could write into your guestbook after 600 or so comments... Maybe this one for the future "I have seen and criticed your first photos"... or for memories "next time, I'll order snails and pig intestine sausage for you at the restaurant"...

I also wonder how you come out with so many good photos, looks like your brain is directly connected to your camera... but you've got the downside of this benefit : not easy to do your self editing, eh?

Thanks for taking some of the most inspiring photos I have ever had the pleasure of viewing. Your work is fantastic and diverse. Also, thanks for providing details of the way you shoot and the equipment etc. I can't wait to go travelling again soon with your photos as inspiration.

I was interested to see that you shoot in P mode quite alot, perhaps I will try that more when taking everyday street scenes.

Keep up the good work,
Adam

I've never seen a collection of portraits that better captured the story of a people. You have a gift for composition that seems to be as profound as perfect pitch is to a musician. You are truly in the wrong line of work. Leave the computers. There are lots of people who can sit behind a desk all day. Very few have your ability to see the world around you the way that you do.

Best wishes,

Tom Barnard

Your images have a unique color treatment. Your documentary skills are superb. Your point of view is very human. Your images of Cardiff are just as vivid and telling as the more exotic parts of the world you shoot in. I always enjoy going through your galleries; you have real talent.

AS A GUEST, I HATE INDIA FOR IT IS A COUNTRY FULL OF MALE CHAUVINISM. ALTHOUGH A MOTHER OF THREE BOYS I WOULD NEVER RIDICULE A FEMALE CHILD ALTHOUGH HEALTHY.I LOVE MY COUNTRY WHERE I LIVE FOR THIS EQUALITY OF THE SEXES IS GIVEN FIRST PRIORITY IN THE REGION I LIVE. FOR MEN AND WOMEN ARE EQUAL.FOR MOTHERS ARE SUPERIOR AS THEY HAVE TO BEAR THE BURDEN OF CHILD BEARING AND REARING.

Dave 24-Oct-2006 22:28
I was reading about Leica Lenses, for me these lenses need to much distance to focus. The 28mm f2.8 lens needs 0,7m (focusing range 0,7m-infinity). With me Canon 17-40 f4 I just need 0,28m. As I saw on your great pictures, Maciej, You are very close when you take your photos, I think it was not your camera. What do you think?
Maciej Dakowicz 19-Oct-2006 17:26
haha, I don't think Santa Claus is that rich.. unfortunatelly :(
Arnold 19-Oct-2006 14:25
Hey, I was reading (profile) that u get your cameras in December, maybe this Christmas Santa's find a New leica M8 with the 28mm for u in his bag. JOU; JOU; JOU...
Dave 13-Oct-2006 15:32
with or without a leica go on with your pictures, you'll be one of the greatest of this new century!!!Remind me words in 50 years.
Guest 13-Oct-2006 15:07
Yeah, thats true, and lenses are very expensive too, but you at least have one of them. And in that camera your 50mm is like a 70mm more or less, good for your type of portraits. But you can make the same pictures with your reflex.
Maciej Dakowicz 13-Oct-2006 14:58
I'd love to have the M8, but it is just too expensive for me
Dave 13-Oct-2006 14:52
Hi Maciej,
Are you tented for the M8 or you prefer full frame reflex?
Maciej Dakowicz 13-Oct-2006 12:10
I have a Leica M6 TTL, but I don't use it much, I use the 5D all the time now
Dave 13-Oct-2006 12:02
You use a Leica M? But you work in digital always
Gustav 11-Oct-2006 20:40
Hi maciej, you have a great eyepoint. You are a Canon shooter, but I saw in your interview that you take pictures with a Leica M6. Which camera you prefer? and,Are you interested in the new Leica M8

Birmane 08-Aug-2006 17:41

"Oko", wrodzony dar podpatrywania rzeczywistości, i później malowania światłem swojej wizji świata, utrwalania relacji, ducha ludzi (niektóre ludy wierzą że zdjęcia kradną duszę, i uciekaja przed apartem, ja to szanuję, zreszta sama atak uważam, i chyba skutecznie bronię przed osobą usiłującą zdjecie mi zrobić - taki paradoks :-) "demokracji". mimo że lustrzanki cyfrowe skutecznie zawojowały świat i zdjecia wychodza z nich naprawdę super! (kolory) na razie jeszcze bronię slajdów (zobaczymy na jak długo).Narazie się uczę i poszukuję w necie stron, takich jak twoje, żeby podpatrywać ciekawych ujęć, kadrów, no i dokumentów kultur.
Życzę powodzenia w publikacjach! bo posiadanie świetnych fotografii to raz, a dwa - to pewnie przebicie sie z nimi do wydawców.

Pozdrawiam

a w załaczniku moje skromne próby rejestrowania rzeczywistości:

Maisy 01-Aug-2006 05:25
I've looked through your photos and find them so beautiful and profound, especially those of children living in poverty. I plan on volunteering in India in a couple of years and I'll be bringing my camera for sure. Your work has inspired me to put aside my fear of being told off when it comes to taking pictures of the life around me. If I have the chance to communicate in ways words fail, it's worth the risk. While viewing your pictures I realised that you're doing these people such a favour. You're telling their stories and opening the eyes of so many to what's going on and how it needs to change. Thank you!

I have just discovered your site and strolled through 2 of your galleries, and I am just amazed by the lovely (in all senses of the word) way you look at people in your pictures, your compositions and colors, and the way you talk about them, humbly, tenderly. I have been shooting pictures for a while but you are just showing me what I should aim for. My very warm thanks for that. I hope you will soon find a way to make a living from your passion, you deserve it ! Good luck !

Had a good time viewing your snaps of different hues and shades. I am myself an avid photographer-regret giving up an SLR for the newer digital camcorder with still photography.
Talking about your 3 weeks vacation- India is always a good choice- BUT avoid the touristy places as they tend to be more expensive and according to me- stereotyped. It is always advisable to be a bit away from the main towns-visit them but donot stay there. For example if you happen to be in Rajasthan and plan to visit Pushkar-no doubt the time to be there is the annual fair time but then the cost of living-eating etc go up. It is better to stay at places like the Kamp Site, just 3 kms away from the main town (http//www.kampsite.org/)These are places which cater to indivisual needs and are more personal.Best of holiday in India and happy clicking of Rajasthan.I had a hep of a time at Kampsite-came for 7 days ended up staying for 107days- such is the difference in such places.

Maciej,
I am volunteering my services to create a website which will sell orange bracelets. All proceeds will go to building an orphanage in Cambodia. Several large companies across the UK, US, and Australia will be participating in this effort. I wanted to purchase 72 resolution digital photos of your shots in cambodia for the site. I tried purchasing prints via the website but it kept saying my cart was empty. How do I purchase them?

Nancy McGuire

Have been looking at your pictures for the last 6 months. All are really beautiful. You have a gift. You look up to Alex Webb, but without doubt your photos are better than his. I run my own hotel in the Cotswolds www.dialhousehotel.com only about an hour and a half from Cardiff. Don't get nearly enough time to go out and do what I most enjoy. Would love to have the time to travel to India and do what you are doing. It is a real passion of my mine, but I am not so gifted as you. You will do very well with photography. You should approach National Geographic - I can't really see them turning you down. Maybe you could submit an article to them written and shot already. If ever you come to the Cotswolds stop by the Dial House.

I admit that it is impossible that you could concentrate on my critique inside the miles that you receive to diary, nevertheless I want to leave test of all that I admire you and of the infinity of knowledge that you contribute to us the fans that of a form or other one we turn into vicious expressionists of the art that we take inside and that we find in the photography and in TE way of expressing.
I am grateful for your educations and learn every day studying your photos.

Maciej,
I find you a superb photographer, very inspiring for me. I regularly have a look at your galleries and it always is a real pleasure. Congratulations!

Maciej,

I don't own all the cameras I shoot with. My work at the magazine allows me to shoot with a variety of gear as it comes through the office. Until recently, I actually didn't own a digital camera.

I try to shoot every day, but recently me schedule hasn't allowed for it. I am sometimes going through my existing inventory of images. I am often returning to images, I didn't respond to immediately and finding elements that once tweaked in Photoshop make for a more succesful image. A major thing I often end up doing is cropping images or converting them to black and white or both.

Thanks for the interest.

Hello Maciej
just a question,as you speak about inspiration.
Did you ever plan to go to Alang shipbreaking cemetary in India, the world largest shipbeaking yard, quite surrealist beach, with so many ghost boats, and so many people workin in terrible conditions.
I think it will be a fantastic spot for a reporter with the eyes you have. You could make here a testimony like in the Cambodgia garbage.
did you know this place ?

PS: I just read about the stampede in Chennai which killed 42 people. Now I understand why you were so depressed. I would be too! Were you photographing the event too?
Leland Wong 11-Jan-2006 07:28
I traveled in India for over two months a while back. There's good days and bad days. I understand...after awhile it seems like you're photographing the same thing over and over again. I would imagine it's crazier nowadays with a digital slr...everyone wants to look at their images on the screen afterwards. Bugging and pestering you...then the monsoon rains..days and days of rain, holed up in your hotel room can really get you down. Plus in the midst of the winter, the winter blues can have an afffect on you too.

When I get stumped in my creativity, I often think of this what Titus the magician in Tangalle, Sri Lanka once told me when he taught me some of his magic tricks. "When performing your magic, always think of what it was like when you first saw the magic act." The magic never goes away.

Photography is your calling in life. You have been given this vision to share with everyone in this material world to bring about good karma.

Hello Maciej. I'm visit your galleries, every now and then (with great interest, i might add). my compliments, you've got a very exquisit eye for good composotion, although you're rather looking for the "story-telling" ("Magnum") picture, i like most of your pictures for its own aesthetic. I've seen you've changed or evolved your equipment a little, with the canon eos 5D. Is this know your main workhorse, and would you buy it again, or rather stay with a 20D and buy f/2.8 lenses instead? Thanks for any feedback. Best regards, Jim.
Patrik Maechler 06-Jan-2006 17:44
Hello Maciej,
I think i know what you are going trough, travelling alone can be VERY annoying and depressing, especially India! In 2002 i was working 4 weeks in Mumbai while i had the most depressed phase of my life so far. It was raining all the time, i was feeling sick in my stomach, work was not going well because of some bureaucratic or lazy indians (at least i was thinking this at that moment). The cab drivers always wanted to cheat me, everybody wanted my money for every small service, and i slowly started to HATE it. More and more, i stayed in the hotel room and took pictures of the silly local TV with my camera while eating room service food. Finally sitting in the plane back to Switzerland, i was so happy to escape and swore to never ever come back... Well, it took me 3 years and i was back there, challenging my trauma, and this time i enjoyed my time in India very much. Sometimes one is just at the wrong place in the wrong time, but one should never give up and take the challenge! Good work is yours, take a rest and keep going on!
Regards from a well-traveled service engineer!

Very inspirational, as I've just picked up a Canon 350D and am learning photography. I studied anthropology, I love travel and love photography too - I hope to be combining all three passions. I'm planning on taking a SE Asia trip in the spring, and really want to step up my photography skills, so it's nice to see someone who has taken it to the next level. This is an exquisite collection of photographs. Your body of work reflects alot of talent. Your positioning of imagery and emotion is especially moving. I work in the design world as an Art Director, and was suprised to read that you are not currently employeed as a photo journalist. If you continue to showcase your portfolio - I think it only be a matter of time. Best of luck.

Hi Maciej,

Just came across your photos. Quite Excellent. You and I are VERY similar (from shyness, to our 'day jobs' of systems engineering, to equip choices, to our mutual desire to become photojournalists fulltime). I've only been shooting just barely 2yrs. I'm moving to Asia (Indonesia) next year to teach English, and focus on photojournalism in the area, then every year, move to a new Asian country--teaching english and focus on that culture. Good luck with your goals!

Wonderful galleries you do have a way of capturing just the right moment in someone's eye to convey the emotion they are feeling at the time. As I travel I am always amazed at the spirit of the people in the so called third world countries, joy is an emotion that is not controlled by the material things around us, no matter what some people may believe. Anyway, enough being philisophical, just really enjoyed your galleries

Hi Maciek!
I bought three pictures from your Cambodia gallery (about the children) there are just amaizing. The unfortunate reality is that you don't have to go to far to see the same thing. The same scenario can be seen in South and Central America, Africa, Asia,,,,etc. etc.
I do mostly Wildlife and Nature/Travel Photography but I enjoy photographing children from around the world as well. I just started posting my galleries couple of weeks ago so I only have a few. Take a look at my galleries you have the time.
By the way, I am not sure what you mean when you say that you lost information from your profile page and wants to fix it....If someone erased information from it, it is very easy to enter it again with the "edit" option. Dear Mr Maciej Dakowicz,

I went through a number of photo albums of Hong Kong, looking for the right photograph which I can carry in my call for papers for an academic conference to be held in Hong Kong by the end of 2005. I picked one of your photos downloaded freely from , because it represents Hong Kong so well. I know that you are prepared to share that photograph for free, but I would still like to acknowledge it with the following caption -

Free photograph downloaded from http://www.pbase.com/maciekda/image/31470889. Photographer: Maciej Dakowicz from Poland who once lived in Hong Kong.

Please let me know if I mistyped anything, or if you find anything objectionable. I was an amateur photographer many years ago, and I enjoy your albums so much. I hope you will come to Hong Kong again.

With best regards,
Robert Chung at the University of Hong Kong

Hi Maciek,

I just looked at your wonderful india photos. You did a fantastic job. I retire next year and hope to make a trip to India shortly after. I have been a photographer for many years and switched to digital last year. I now have a Nikon D70. I was wondering about your workflow. How do you achive the fantastic saturation? Is it done in camera or via Photoshop? Also, what lens do you use for all of the up close people photographs. If you have a web site with the above questions answered please forward it to me at:

Maciek,

Thank you for sharing these wonderful pictures with the world. They really remind me of my childhood in Cambodia. I just cannot tell you how much these pictures mean to me. I hope one day I can find a position within an NGO when I complete my study in the US.

cordialement.

Maciek:
I just stumbled into your site. What a pleasant surprise!!! India is a ‘gold mine’ for photographers, but people in parts of India are very hard to photograph, because of this notion that ‘outsiders’ come to photograph poverty and all the ills of the society. You sure have done a wonderful job of capturing the spirit and vitality of that country that unite a very diverse society. I will add you to my favorite so I can check on your whereabouts and work. Thanks for sharing all your talent.

Oh man, your photos are absolutely amazing!! At first i just stumbled acorss one gallery of Cambodia that i saw on the front page of this site.... took a look inside and was very impressed by the quality of your photos.... just superb photojournalsim in my opinion!

Then I head out to the gallery and I see a dozen other galleries that appear to have the same standard and "professionalism". I'm sure no one would doubt you if you told them you shot regularly for Lonely Planet, National Geographics, Aperture, Magnum etc. etc.

Upon reading your profile, I'm surprised to read that you are shy about shooting people, judging from what I've seen, these photos do not reflect such a character at all! I was encouraged by this however, as I have similar feelings when doing street photography... thus you've given me hope & ambition in what one can achieve despite their "limitations" lol I'm studying engineering aswell, petroleum not software though ><

Anyways... enough from me for now...it's really late... but I'm definitely coming back to browse through your photos more thoroughly and hopefully comment on them when I get some time!!

Dear Maciej Dakowicz
Your photos are absolutely beautiful there is a real focus on people and their stories.

Just for your information I found some copies of your pictures on another website.
The person Sřren Maagaard claims the right to these pictures. (And claims that he took these pictures himself?)
Please See following Web link:

Impressive photography indeed - Reading the rest of your Guestbook there is nothing more I can say - it has all been said before. If only I could have got the same wonderful pictures of India when I was there earlier this year. Mine pale along side yours but you now have opened my eyes as to the way I should have been looking at that fantastic country and the wonderful people. You get right in amongst them and yet obtain the feeling of space around them. Great compositionly work!

Dear Maciek Da,

I like to let you know that I really love your work. I thinks they are all great and they are products of your true love in photography.

I felt very sorry that you lost your equipment and had hard time while traveling. In order to give you some support, could you please give me an idea how much it will cost me to use 12 photos of the Cambodian set for Calendar. Do you have term and conditions ready. if so, please e-mail it to me. Thanks.

Like you, I am fascianted with India though I haven't travelled as much in that country. Your pictures are great (esp. the portraits shots) and it's so inspiring to see your determination where shooting India is concerned.

Keep it up.

just been on your webpage and realise you will be in India shooting away. I had my first injection of indian culture late last year and only just starting to upload my images. I too will be back there in the future, but not sure when or where abouts!! please check out the images that are taking me so long to upload (pbase.com/phot_hography) i cant believe i took a photo of the same little girl at Ankor Wat! keep it going - what a waste it would of been for you to leave this medium years ago - you have my vote

Pbase is running a bit stop start tonight so posting comments is tricky. I wouldn't know where to start anyway. Your galleries are the best I've seen on Pbase by a very long way. Not just the technical qualities - love the vivid colours and light - but obviously the humanity you show. Inspirational and shattering at the same time.

Mac is as talanted an artist as any I've seen, ever. His ability and courage to depict people in absolute poverty is highly admirable. Thank you for showing us, the fortunate few who can boast photography as a hobby/profession, how there are many less fortunate who barely gets by with little hope of ever attaining a bare minimal standard of living.
King Ho 23-Feb-2005 17:14
Maciek, I have been looking at people's picture on pbase and any other place. I normally just look, hardly leave any comment, but your pictures just so beautiful catch my attention.
It clearly shows the brillant eyes of the photographer reflected on your images. It's some
skill that most difficult to learn as a photographer. I always think that good pictures take
more than practics and skill, it's vision of the photographer how he look at the world.
I wish one day, I could have a series of pictures that I can tell myself I enjoy it like I enjoy yours.

Thanks

Hi,
I'm a staff at a social work agency called REACH Family Service Centre in Singapore. My company would be sending youths and volunteers to Cambodia to help the needy street children. I'm requesting for your permission to use some of the photos to be included in posters and postcards which we will use for fund-raising purposes. I've sent an email to you, but haven't got a reply. Please email me as soon as you can. Thanks a lot!

Maciek,

Your photos are absolutely beautiful... there is a real focus on people and their stories, something that is very difficult to capture. While your comments about the stories behind the photos really add to them, I think that even without them, your photos are able to tell a story on their own. Incredible.

Please let me know when you release your "Children of Cambodia" calendar, I would love to purchase one.

Thanks,

Vinh

I discovered your album when I searched "kids playing". Your work is remarkable. I feel the photographs of the Cambodian children digging through garbage as the most moving...I loved the photographs of the children and gypsies in India. I've noticed most of the photographs you take in other countries have children. I love this theme. You have the most wonderful life exploring and travelling and taking photographs. You are so lucky. When I grow up I hope I will be able to travel and take photographs like you do. Thank you for these photographs. I'm inspired by them and by you.

Mr Maciek,
Your work is comparable to one of National Geographic's most reknown photographers: Steve McCurry. Keep up the great work. You're a natural. I examine your pics to try to get tips on how to take good potraits.
And by the way, I'm a software engineer and I work with boring computers, too. :-)
I still haven't bought a digital SLR because I had not seen digi pics like my EOS 3 takes on Fuji film; Not until now!! Wow!
You should open your own photo potrait studio.

One of the most extraordinary photographers on pbase. Obviously, the work would not be so compelling if you didn't relate to people first. There are so few folks left recording the variety of human experience in this way. Bravo.
Gayle Koehler 06-Dec-2004 19:08
I was not intending to view photos when I happened upon yours in a Google
search for "pigeons." You see, I just took in an injured one. But your photos were so compelling -- I had to see them all! The street art fair was fabulous! Viewing the artwork and the artists, I got a sense of the Polish people. But they were particularly interesting to me, since, I too, make my living as an artist. Through your photos, I was able to see the art of the people...the art of their time.
Thank you so much!

Its difficult and time consuming to photograph when travelling I know, please keep doing it! Your results are really appreciated!!!

I like your pictures a lot, especially your indian gallery. I have just bought a 17-40 and 70-200 f/4 as well. (Yoour galleries are one of the reasons, why i bought those).

Dear Maciek,

I just wanted to tell you that your photos are just great, amazing, astonishing...and inspiring for me! You are able to see and to catch life itself and things, that many people simply cannot see. I am Polish and I live in Warsaw, and I'm proud of you! That such a great photographer is Polish. Some of your photos made me cry, some of them made me smile...These are the most touchy pictures I've ever seen!!!
I wish I could take pictures like those...I'm an amateur photographer, trying to do her best. It's always been my dream to travel to Asia or Africa, and take marvellous pictures there, because I love photography. Some day maybe I will...
Thank you for those pictures..I am hoping to see more!

Best wishes!

I am sorry for maciek what happend in india.
You were really pissed of and dissapointed what happend. I had the same feeling, when I lost my camera, but I recognized that it was my fault ´cause I wasn´t carefull enouugh.
I hope you are not mad at the people in india and you might go to inda one day again and take some pics to show us the beauty of that country.
I was in poland , everybody told me to be very carefull when I would use the train.
I used the train from wroclaw to lublin, I couldn´t close my eyes for a nap, just because I met students, couple minuits before I took the train and they told me their cellphones were stolen.
I was shocked, but it was a good advice. I had my camera equipment next to me all time and nothing happend. Since I lost my camera I am very carefull in foreign countrys, it doesn´t matter , if I am in poland, germany or the usa, everywhere in the world can happend you the same think like maciek.
Just be carefull.

I wish you good luck for your future .

To those who condemn Maciek.
I am a Polish too, as he is, and I am very surprised, that some Westerners are so "against" his work. Most of you think of Poland as a third world, even if we have just joined EU. And yes, we still are quite poor to compare with you. I can guarantee you, that it is not easy to buy a good camera with average earnings in Poland. So we should admire Maciek, for what he decided to do. To be a witness of poverty, misfortune and other dark sides of life. Because he can be much closer to this live than you EVER could. With best regards to Sylvian.

Do u really think it is >such a great loss for you? Dont u think you should start selling your pics to give the >money (or parts of it) to a organisation that helps children in Cambodia for example?

ha, have you ever travelled on your own with a camera to 3rd world countries? I was on my own in this rubbish dump in Cambodia, at the beggining there i felt like stupid walking between those people and taking pictures, do you think it was easy for me? i was alone, if something happened to me nobody would even know that.. now when i look at those pictures i can't belive i was there... but when i was there at that moment it was completely different - all those people around me, they didn't even pay much attettion to my presence, sometimes they smiled at me. nobody asked me for money and nobody told me to go away, people were friendly.
and for me photography is a serious thing, i show the world the way it is. and those pictures with people who dont want it? it is a part of photography, i smile to them and shoot, i like those natural expresions ;) i can remove those pictures if one day they contact me, no problem. but i want to show that taking pictures with people is not easy.

and you know, maybe i should just stop taking pictures... it is just too risky, too danerous, it takes too much effort. and soon i will not be able to afford it - it consumes lots of moeny and... lots of time. instead of going to India I could have visited my family! then i would just stay at home and enjoy life, why do I take all this risk, do i need all those problems?
and have you ever been robbed in a 3rd world country? it is not fun. at this moment i should still be in India now - but I am back home, just because someone wanted to steal my bag. My last trip to India cost me lots of money - for the equipment i lost - instead of buying cameras, airtickets and travelling I could buy a car and have a nice, easy life... i am not rich, loosing all the equipment was a big loss to me. and i lost not only the equipment, but also all my plans about becoming a professional photographer were ruined. i dot know, now i am jus affraid to walk around with my camera. if i loose it somehow again i may not buy it for the 3rd time. it is just too expensive.

and about selling pictures... do you think people buy pictures? so far people have ordered 9 prints, and those people are... 3 persons from... Poland. and 2 of them knew me before... so you see, i am getting really rich showing those poor kids on the internet.
and i dont think my few dollars would help those kids at the dump much, there are many international NGO organizations helping those people there, doing good work. i think i help those poor people more showing their life than sending them few dollars.

so why am I still doing all this photography?

I just love it.
AngMo 04-Aug-2004 13:19
I fully agree with Shyamal Bagchee.
You even make pics of people who obviously dont want it - as in the indian gallery. Those people have the same rights as people from the "first world".
Why is there not a single pic of you on this site....do u feel uncomfortable with a pic of you in the internet?

Furthermore you are now down bcs your equipment is gone. With that equipment you made pics of people that could NEVER EVER afford such a equipment. Do u really think it is such a great loss for you? Dont u think you should start selling your pics to give the money (or parts of it) to a organisation that helps children in Cambodia for example? This would be a small "thank you" to those kids that let you make those pics!

Still some of your pics are really very good...i dont want to offend you or something. I hope you understand a little what i want to say.

Would be nice if you could give a comment on those critical posts in here.

Sylvain, how French of you to side with the thief.
Guest 29-Jul-2004 01:39
this is an expensive hobby we all have. i have become so attached to my equipment, but often forget that i'm holding something that is only material to someone else who is just looking to make a quick buck. losing your camera must be like losing your good arm.
well, i hope this loss will not discourage because life goes on and as it does, there will always be something to make a picture out of. good luck to you.

I m real sorry to here of your lost in india.
Its really frustrating sometimes and makes people wanna quit.
My sympathy to u.
Shyamal Bagchee 22-Jul-2004 08:30
I am sorry for your loss--and I do like some of the images on your PBASE site. I hope you get back okay, and can recover some of the loss from your insurance company. But do you have model releases from your many Indian subjects? or, was a subject's agreement taken for granted--in exchange for a smile or perhaps a rupee? I am afraid, a third-world traveller doing this sort of thing--in case my guess about your method of aquiring images is correct--in the first world will be lynched, even today--in fact, more so today.
No people, however, cute, exotic, intriguing, etc. is just for the taking. I am sorry to be making an example (warning?) of you--but the habit is unfortunately widely spread among first world citizen.

Hi Maciek,
I feel sorry for what happenned to you...but...
Did you ever think that millions of people in India can't find a way to have 1 cent per day to buy food? Some are starving to death while you shoot them with a 6000US$ gear?

There is a flooding in India now, 310 have died already how about not only going there to take picture of them but also giving them a big hand?

I lost everything in Thailand too, I was sad, sick and angry. But then I turned back to try to understand why I had it stolen and I finally met someone showed me the real life there. I met more and more poors and I felt ashame of being angry at them before.

All the best for your future, you of course must keep taking pictures they are wonderfull. Just...take it easy, many people have much worst issues in their lifes.

Im sorry that you incurred such a loss at the time when you were planning to start something new.

I have a possible solution. There is a professional photographer in Delhi, a very nice guy.
Why dont you contact him. May be you could sell him some prints or may be you can assist him in some of his photo shoots. For all that you know he may even lend you a decent digital camera and you can still have your new photos from India.

He is listed here in Pbase. He usually responds in a day or two if you email him.

http://pbase.com/rahul

his name is Rahul Dutta you can probably even look him up in the local phone book.

Hi Maciek,

The colors and composition have towed my eyes to look through your fantastic photos.
Sorry to hear your losses in India. As Chinese has a one word of saying, Ą§losing a fortune will clear your obstacles upfrontĄ¨.

Have a Good Day and Good Luck!

Hi Maciek,
I happened to stumble upon your India photos and was very much impressed by
them. Your gear/stuff being stolen is a very unfortunate thing. Being an Indian, I can only hope that you don't take this as the only lasting impression of India. There are
more than a billion people in India, ofcourse all of them cannot be nice and some of them
are nasty, but I can assure you that most of the people are good. Unfortunately, you ended up dealing with nasty people. Don't give up on your photography.

Hi Maciek,

Your photos and your recent misfortune have been brought to my attention recently, and I am very impressed with the creative progress you've made in the past two years. I've just been through all your galleries and have picked out some favourites. Your images show a great passion for photography as well as the human race, and I hope that neither will be dampened by your recent experience. Actually, I'm saying this knowing full well that this is not going to happen; as Woody Allen puts it in 'Love & Death', "To love is to suffer", whilst what doesn't kill us will only make us stronger ;-) This kind of thing has never happened to me (knock on wood), but I think I would regret the loss of the images more than the equipment. But even so, the way I see it, the best images are always in your head, making the real skill being able to show them to other people. If it's any consolation, your stolen camera gear will never benefit its new owner to the extent that you have made use of it. Think of it also this way (as the famous quote about the secret of photography goes) it's "F8 and being there". You have certainly made more than the average enthusiast's effort to 'be there', and you have probably put yourself in plenty of overtly risky situations, only to be lulled into a false sense of security (how cruel). You had got great mileage of your camera. I'm sure that despite the setback, your passion will take you to where you want to go in your life -- maybe you just need to slow down a little ;-)

All the best,
m

I am sorry for what happened to you in India. I was thieved in Indore and robbed in Bombay when I traveled in India. Luckily most important things are still preserved.

Please keep going and bringing everybody more good photos.
And, hope you still have faith in India.

it's me again: I just read your latest comments on your profile page after written my first entry. I feel very sorry for you! I can only try to understand how tough that must be: no money, no passport and no 300D!!! I'm digital rebeller as well and I love it - I'd be sooooo pissed. But you must start again, buy a new camera and start from new (I know its expensive) but anything else would be terrible waste of talent!
take care and all the best, urs

You have a really good eye for capturing the moment. If you want to change your passion into a profession, try selling your images to "stock photography agencies"
they are always interested in unique photographs.

AC United: hey, I wish I was chinese being in Hong Kong, taking pictures of people would be so much easier... really, you just talk to people or they don't notice you... if you are a gwailo things are much more difficult, belive me. most of the time I hear NO PICTURE LA!

They are not just pictures, each one of them tells a story. A story Cambodia, a story of the people of cambodia. You truely are an artist. Your pictures have really shown what Cambodia is about. The Good and the bad. Well Done.

You are one of the better travel photographers on pbase, Maciek, because you seem to really care about who and what you photograph. You bring passion and patience to your images, and you seem to be able to consistently find those moments in time, light, and space that define the essence of your subject. I think your work with your smaller G3 has allowed you to work a bit more intimately with people than with your DSLR, although you do make very powerful images with that as well. You manage to put into practice much of what I suggeset in my own instructional galleries on expressive travel photography here on pbase. I am adding you to my favorite artists lists, and will suggest that all of those folks pay a visit to your remarkably humane galleries.

Hi, Maciek. Sometimes i think - is it worth to take camera with me when i travel or go somewhere?! There are so many people who "has an eye" and millions of photos are available to see from all around the world, but i can't help myself not to carry my camera with me. Anyway - i love portraits and have special heart for Asia. Your works are wonderful. aivis from Latvia

Hi Marciek,

i came across ur gallaries here. I just love the Camodia pics, all the kids tucked at my heart...they're all so innocent, tough, happy AND sad!

but being a HongKong-er as i am, i would say u did a very good job capturing the other side of Hong Kong. The post-card like HK-skyline is great but the temple pics are better!

Very impressive indeed. Thank you for sharing with everybody!

hello marciek

just stumble across your gallery by accident/chance and thought i drop a message, regarding your work, its brilliant... much to be admired. keep it up.

really liked the cambodia series - you've capture the truth of humanity, happiness in the eyes and smile of the children, and @ the same time (reality) its sad to see these childrens living in poverty :(

anyhow keep up the good work.

feel free to reply me an email as i am a die hard amature photographer as well.
