moss flow

Viroqua, Wisconsin USA, Middle Earth

On the continuing saga of life we spent some time exploring the back forty.... down a dried creek-bed, we paused often, soaking in the pure melodies and base rhythms of Mother Earth.

As her boy continued forth to see the decaying deer ahead, we turned south away from the parched stonescape. Soon we encountered her fenceline. A point she had somehow never been. We were at the boundary of four old farms... as remote as one can get in our area. An enchanted forest, in these magical unglaciated lands.

There, as she leaned over the rusted barbs, extending in both directions as far as she could see... a hidden valley road!

Her father used to talk about it, from the old days... The neighbor capped the entrance with a barn, way back when, making the road useless.... and nature had done her inexorable work, reclaiming what man had made... until, that is, the vision of two dreamers lead them south.

And it was there... along the decaying road a perfect, miniature stream fed by the prehistoric aquifer benith... unimaginable beauty, unseen by humans since the old farmer capped the valley road.
