17-55DX with and without UV filter

This test was done to show the effect of a UV filter on the lens.

The left column shows three 100% crops of pictures taken with the 17-55DX lens at its best apertures, and without UV filter. The right column shown the same aperture range but with UV filter on the lens.

My conclusion is that the UV filter on the lens is visible and causes slightly less sharpness although the difference is not big. For me at least not big enough to remove the UV filter from my lens (which I use mostly for lens protection) except for maybe the most critical pictures.


All pictures taken with D2X, tripod, MLU. The UV filter is a B+W F-Pro.
