Samburu National Reserve May 21, 2013

Leaving Nairobi early this morning, we flew aboard a Twin Otter Air Kenya 17-passenger plane to Samburu National Reserve. The roads have all changed since we were last there in 2009 due to the flooding & wash out of one of the bridges. En route to camp, we had quite a lovely game run with sightings of all of Samburu's Unique Five! (Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, oryx, and Grevy's zebra.) The following is the animals & birds we saw in order on this game run:

-gerenuk, goshawk, impala, weavers, giraffe, gerenuk, Grants gazelle, oryx, giraffe, crocodile, oryx herd, gerenuk, Grants gazelle, lilac breasted roller, giraffe & oryx, Grevy's zebra, Somali ostrich mating, cheetah, warthog, tawny eagle, redbill hornbill, superb starling, grey-headed sparrow weavers & hadada ibis.

We arrived at Larsen's Camp just in time for lunch, which really could have been anytime as we would be the ONLY people in camp for the next tow days - awesome! Having lunch on the deck that overlooks the river is truly one of the best things in life to me.

On our afternoon game run we saw the following animals/birds in order:

dik dik, rat, baboon, elephant, yellow neck spurfowl, elephants crossing the river, giraffe fighting, dik dik, impala, more dik dik, saddle bill stork, and dik dik.
