1052. Sometimes you're reminded that it doesn't matter

30 December 2007

While I was at Celtic Park yesterday watching Celtic beat Gretna 3-0, a tragedy was unfolding on another football park about 20 miles away. With 12 minutes of the match between Motherwell and Dundee United remaining, Phil O'Donnell, Motherwell's captain had a seizure and collapsed and died on the pitch. Phil O'Donnell played professional football at Motherwell, Celtic and Sheffield Wednesday. At his prime he was a superb player, and was part of the Celtic squad that won the league in 1997-8. He was capped only once for Scotland - a promising international career that was cut short as a result of a series of unfortunate injuries. He was 35-year-old father of four. Wouldn't it be good if on Wednesday, instead of all the sectarian bile and rage that a vocal minority of Rangers and Celtic fans throw at each other, we can remember Phil O'Donnell and enjoy the match for what it is: sport and entertainment.
