835. Capital Christmas

4 December 2006

This one is from yesterday when I passed through Edinburgh on my way to Lisbon. When I arrived in Portugal, I was too tired to sort through my photos; plus, it only seemed right that I should spend some time talking with Alexandre and Sílvia (who are letting me stay in their spare room, and who picked me up from the airport) and Lídia (who was visiting when I arrived). The train journey from Dundee to Edinburgh was a nightmare: a women and her two young tykes were sitting with their feet on the table listening to a DVD at cinema volume. Needless to say no-one said anything to them (myself included), although they had plenty to say to the poor man who was working in the buffet car (who nodded sympathetically and shook his head gravely as appropriate). Edinburgh is... well, Edinburgh is as it always is: a nice place to spend a couple of hours when waiting for transport to go somewhere else (there's the Glasgow bias!). Uneventful flight to London, then a three hour wait at Heathrow for the flight to Lisbon. Heathrow is what I imagine Hell to be like; it is a seriously miserable place to be: a shopping centre on steroids. Once on the plane, I spent the next two hours squashed up against the aircraft's bulkhead: my neighbour was a rather large young women (the kind my gran euphamistically called 'big-boned') who had no respect for the British notion of personal space. When she wasn't bumping my ribs and arms with her elbows, then she was pushing my legs with her knees. I suppose that's what you must expect when travelling cargo class!
