Cambodia We almost didn't make it to Angkor Wat. We were scheduled to fly from Yangoon to Bangkok then to Siem Reap, but the Bangkok-Siem Reap leg was cancelled due to a riot at the Thai embassy (which got burnt). So we got a free stay at Bangkok for couple of nights, before catching the next plane out. The Angkor area is simply amazing. The temples appear to have endless layers of courtyards, corridors and false doors. The intricate bas reliefs on the walls tell stories in great detail that could make your head spin. Much of the ruins are still that -- ruins -- so most of the time we felt like we were archaeologists exploring the area for the first time. We spent 7 days at Siem Reap, visiting almost all the temples at a leisurely pace, including touring the main Angkor Wat temple twice. We hired a taxi the first day, but found that the "tu-tu" motorcycle trolley option was more fun and cheaper. The last day, we attempted biking the 7 km from Siem Reap to the temple, but the traffic on the road can be at times quite challenging.
