I travel past this building in Lake Alfred, Florida just about once per week. I finally decided to stop and take a few photos of this interesting structure. I appears to have had at least two sidings. Both alongside the loading/unloading docks in the front and rear of the building. It may have had another siding between the long side that I was able to get more shots of, but it's hard to tell. The connection to the Old ACL main line is about one mile north and it appears from Google Earth that the line ran up from Winter Haven, Florida and connected in Lake Alfred. I had assumed it was a citrus storehouse, given the insulated reefer doors on the loading platform but the signs on the building clearly state that it's a bag co. I will post more information on the PBase site as I delve deeper into it's history. There are quite a few structures like this in the heart of Florida's citrus country.
I have traveled past this building thousands of times in my life - as a babe in arms on the way to being baptized at the nearby Methodist Church, as a stubbed-toed 8 year old on my bike speeding to swim at Lions Park on Lake Alfred itself, as a teen waiting for the school bus, and now as an adult when I do my 10K practice runs on vacation visits home. My Dad would know everything about this building's history - he was the Comptroller for many years at the Citrus Fertilizer Coop about two blocks away. Email me if you want to know. I live in Housotn now.
