John Griffiths

John James Griffiths, (Shipwright, then Photographer and Stationer)
b.1871, d.1949. He had 6 sisters, and 3 baby brothers who died near birth.
His father James Griffiths, (1834 - 1910) was a dockyard pensioner, who retired early through accident, living at 18 Unity Street, later re-numbered 68.
James bought the Stationer's Shop at 28 Alma Rd. They also owned 30 Alma Rd.
John married Daisy Spurge in November 1899 and took over the shop, having learnt the photographic art from his wife's nephew, Algy Spurge who worked with Friese-Green in The Corridor, Bath, (and who married F-G's niece). They lived at 74 The Broadway, with his father and her mother, and later 3 daughters.
JJG worked from the studio in Alma Road and around Sheppey until he retired aged 70 in 1941

Hello, I have a painting of Ernest Ambley 1929, a landscape ; view of the church among big trees. Behind the painting, there is a stam titled. "PHOTOGRAPHER JOHN GRAFFITHS, Alma Road and Meyrick Road, SHEERNESS, Picture Framer". I have searched the internet for the artist but couldnt find, and the stamp ended me on this website. Can anyone help me know, what I own? Thanks.

I am so sorry not to have seen your letter before. No there were no records kept that exist now - such a shame - no one carried on the business after he retired. He took hundreds of portraits - as well as over 600 views - and passport photos - etc etc. I am so lucky to have the family portraits - Margaret

Dear Sir/Madam On the 17th November 1994 I had a set of photographs taken, which I think were stunning. One of these was given to my mother and it was her favourite photograph of me. When she died my father destroyed it. I don't know why. I was wondering if there are any records of these photos, and if so, could I have a new one made. the order number/receipt was 001731. I have just seen your message. There is no archive of Algy Surge's photos. The ones we have are just family. He died young in 1901. Margaret

Is there an archive of the pictures of A. Spurge Photographer? We found a photo of a cat, made by this studio, and would like to found out more about it, because we reckon that it was ??? 70 ??? years ago quite unusual to have photos made of your pets by a photographer.

to Ian...I do not think my grandfather would have taken your grandfather's portrait, but he could have copied another's photo at the request of your grandmother and maybe put them together as he had passed away.

We have 2 photos of my great grandparents, Thomas and eliza Ormsby, with the logo of John Griffiths, Sheerness. We always assumed they were taken c 1870, because of the clothing. However, now I've checked this site and the census, I see that they must date from c1895. Thomas lived from 1823-1896, while Eliza was 1839-1927. They don't look 50 or 70 years old. I would like to send these pics to see what you think.

reply to Theresa...My grandfather took many hundreds of portrait photos in his studio in the 41 years he worked...everyone had to have a passport photo too during the first world war to get off the island. Also of many military personel to send home to loved ones. If you have photos they are sure to belong to you...try and spot a family likeness !! Margaret

Hello I have two photo's with J Griffiths Sheerness on sea on the bottom of the photo. They are of a young woman holding flowers. We are not sure if she is a member of our family.

an addenda and correction to the above description:- Algy Spurge bought Friese-Greene's shop af 7 The Corridor, Bath, when he retired. John Griffiths was taught by Friese-Greene, who visited Sheerness with Algy more than once.
