Very interesting gallery.
Spent many holidays at Sheerness in the early 60's.
Brought back memories.
I also went out and over the wreck.
Still have the photos somewhere.
Those were the days.

Re the bus accident - my dad was a bus driver on the island, I do remember talk about a bus losing its top deck on the bridge. It must have been the old bridge, as the new Kingsferry bridge was not a problem. I don't think this was the first time this had happened.

i wonder if anyone can help. i was visiting my aunt in invicta road as a kid with my dad in i believe 1967 0r it could have been 1969 in which we had gone to sheerness railway station to get the train home to London but it had been cancelled so had to get on a double decker bus instead. twenty or so minutes later we hit a low bridge and the top half of the bus in which we had been was now reduced to a pile of glass and metal. we were the only two on the bus as far as i remember' does anyone have any further information with regards this crash ?

Hi. Love the photos, so many memories. I had relatives who lived on the island. In sweetness, halfway and Minster. I am trying to find details of relatives called Boyce who ran boat trips off the beach during the . 1960s. Round the wreck or round the harbour. A y help would be great.

FANTASTIC PICTURES OF SHEERNESS. i lived there in the forties. I remember the floods and being cut off from the mainland. Also being rescued by the navy in a row boat. Everyone pulled together to help. It was quite an experience. I regret that Sheppey seems to be left out of the history of England and its Naval and Airforce connections. I now live in Canada and will always think of Sheppey as a very special place.

This will be way too late now, but all I can tell you about Halfway is that it got its name because it was halfway between Sheerness and Minster. I originally lived in Jefferson Road, but moved to Southdown Road in Halfway at a later date. It was quite a nice little community with two pubs, a few shops and houses.

I have a wedding picture circa 1920, the photographers stamp in the bottom left corner is "30 Alma Road John Griffiths Sheerness on Sea". Does anyone remember a photographer being in the town.

Pictures are wonderful and bring back a lot of memories.I lived on James street and joined Royal Navy in 1951. Now live in Canada.But Sheerness is always with me. The Swimming pool.The Raft just off Bishops along the sea wall. The jetty we used to Fish off and swim.Have been home a couple of times in the last 5 years but it is not the same.But I still love the place.And thanks for the pictues they are great. Doug

Hello yes the photographs here are great collection in relation to the Isle of Sheppey you can also find modern photographs on Facebook - Friends of Blue Town Heritage Centre or www.bluetownheritagecentre.com or flckr.com although the latter is still being developed or visit Blue Town Heritage Centre on the Isle of Sheppey Kent, England lots of photographs and objects relating to the island located there. Hi I work as a volunteer at the Blue Town Heritage Centre I am looking for photographs of the National School in Sheerness which was next to Trinity Church there does not seem to be any. My children would enjoy seeing where I went to school it was a great school Mrs Evans was headmistress whilst I was there I left in 1966.

My name is Roland.
I arrived to Sheerness on Sea (SOS!) 3 weeks ago, to have a look into the Marine Parade, where the German author Uwe Johnson lived from 1974 til 1984 and where hi died. His favourite pub was The Napier where he spent 2 hours for writing an drinking and where he talked with natives every evening. I am actually looking for pictures of Johnsons house (No 25/26) and The Napier, the rooms, furnishings and bar. Could you please help its very important for me as an writer.

Hi Trevor, after looking at these photos you wish you could go back to the old days! I know the sea wall was critical but o my did the town planners of the day have to make it all so ugly. Is there such a thing as a 'make Sheerness beautiful again' society?! I am in the process of buying a house in marine parade up close to the sailing club, same side of the road. One of the 3 storey victorian houses. Do you know anything about them, any tales to tell?

what lovely pics of Sheerness! old and new...and what memories they bring back to me. I was born in Minster Hospital...lived in Sheerness went to Braodway Girls school 1956-57. My Mum's family were Gillespie's who lived in Bluetown for many years...my Grandad worked in the Dockyards. Anyone know the family??? Alas, we left when I was 12 and came to Canada but Sheerness will almost be first in my heart.

OK! This is Sheerness. I used to live in Minster Road and then moved to Sheerness when I was nine. I will look through the photos we have and see if there are any of Sheerness. I am actually searching for some pictures of Minster Primary School - used to be on Minster Hill - Barts Hill and Half way, the White House at one end of what i think was Barts Road and the big pub opposite the Minster Road end. While searching I came across this site. It is excellent!

I have enjoyed looking at your galery. I used to come here when i was a kid in the 70's and early 80's and used to enjoy it. Shame it seems such a dump now, all the great places have either gon or rotted been alowed to deteriorate. Do you have any other pictures of the bus/coach station?

have you got anymore pictures of the 1978 floods i lived in beach street at the time, 10 years old and can remember me and my brother watching the st johns ambulance hut go sailing down the road , getting sand bags to block up the doors and trying to get milk at the shops, think we all had to go to the dairy up halfway road, scary at the time, but nice looking back now

Anybody remember the big Guinness clock that used to be at the paddling pool,when I was
a child it came down every year, and on I think the quarter hour would come to life and
things came out of the clock and moved around...wonder what happened to it

I came about your website purely by chance. My mum was telling me about the sea freezing in 1963 upon which she had skated on as a girl. So i was looking for photos. What a wonderful collection of pics you have! I would love to use some of these pics to create an album for my nan & grandad if that's ok.
