HMS Agamemnon 1909

Thanks to Roger Betts for the picture:
"Here's the one of HMS Agamemnon at Sheerness. It's postally dated 1909 which was when my Granddad was on board. He originated from Ipswich but we think this was about the time he met Gran and set the Betts tribe on Sheppey into gear."

Completed in 1908, so only a year old when this was taken. Had a distinguished career, including the Dardanelles, where the armistice with the Ottoman Empire was finally signed on board. After WW1, was converted into a radio controlled target ship, and served until finally sold for scrap in 1927. She was the last pre-dreadnaught to be scrapped.

My great uncle Alfred Edwin Church was a Petty Officer on HMS Agamemnon and died following a diving accident whilst he was looking for a torpedo that had been knocked overboard due to an accident. The incident took place on 03Oct 1911 whilst HMS Agamemnon was moored in Scapa Flow. He was buried with full military honours in St. Magnus Churchyard. Some while later his shipmates paid for a monument to be placed over his grave.
