The name 'Bug Hutch' was well deserved as you had a 50/50 chance of getting bitten if you went! However, its main claim to fame was that it was the only cinema game enough to run a Saturday Matinee for the kids (99% boys if I recall). You had to "check" your guns, rifles, spears, shields and swords with the usherette as you entered and they were locked into a room off the foyer until after the performance (how we all found them afterwards is a mystery but we did). The other attraction of the Argosy was that it showed Science Fiction films and on very rare occasions foreign language films, usually subtitled French ones that included the odd fantasy such as 'Beauty and the Beast', these made a great impression on a young lad and made me realise that Cinema was a great undiscovered treasure trove.

I can confirm that it was the "Argosy Cinema".

It certainly was. when I was a kid it was known as the "Bug hutch"? One of three in Sheerness when I was a nipper. The fabulous Rio and the excellent Ritz being the other two. Before that there was also the Oxford, and the Hippodrome and also one in Queenborough. Anymore anyone?
