I was seven, when this happened and lived with Mum, Dad and two year old brother Keith in the Man of Kent in Clyde Street. Dad got the pub in 1947, having left the Fleet Air Arm. In '47 the living quarters were on both the ground and first floor. By 1953, we had all the accommodation on the first floor, only the business downstairs! During the first days of the flood, Mum was providing flasks of tea and soup to most of the residents. I myself along with my Grandparents evacuated, via the Gunwharf, by RAF launch to Chatham pier and then on back to their home in south London, where I attended school until the Christmas. Wearing the brown uniform of Delemark Road School in London caused many question each and every play time! Happy Christmas to anyone who remembers me and or the 'flood'. Still living at the seaside - Weymouth, better sand!!!:)

I lived here with my nan, not sure what number but I do remember the baker and milkman coming round the streets in rowing boats and lowering baskets out of the bedroom window.

This brought back memories. My nan lived at No.23 and we lived in Jefferson Rd. I was a toddler at the time and I can remember my nan being in a rowing boat,

If these houses were the same as Jefferson Road, they never did recover. Our house was damp ever after this flood. They had no damp courses.

I was living at No.58, next door to the Paynes, during these floods.

This is a little spooky as my house is clearly visible and one of the two heads poking from the upstairs windows is either me or my father.

My grandmother lived in Unity Street (no 53), I was 6 yrs old when these floods occurred.
Now living in Australia where we are having a drought!!

This is just round the corner from Jefferson Road where we lived. My dad was a bus driver in this flood and was credited with saving some lives.
