Sorry to contradict, but this photo is actually looking down the western side of Wrynose, along Wrynose bottom (the upper reaches of the Duddon Valley) towards the Hardknott pass, which is just visible snaking up the mountainside next to the gully in the distance. Still a good photo of one of my favorite roads though...
This brings back memories when I was on holiday as a 10 year old. We chose this route as a way home to our camp site. At the time the day's light was beginning to fade and my mum got so frightened by this windy and narrow road, my dad was instructed to take the next right turn down a flat valley, as the Wrynose Pass continued on from this. Incidentally, I think you will find this is called the Hardknott Pass - in between Ravenglass on the coast and the town of Ambleside.
