This is me at the start of my 1976 PCT hike, along Hwy 96. I read Eric Ryback's "High Adventure" Book in 1975, and went west from Indiana to hike the PCT..I didn't finish it, but in time I did find my home, many friends, Teddi Boston, Eric Ryback, and my career all very near this trailhead. This is still the trailhead and current PCT route up the Devils Ridge out of Seiad Valley. Note the blue jeans, cotton t-shirt Sierra cup and 55 lb pack full of food, Svea123 stove, to get my 120lb body to Crater Lake NP. I hiked to the Lower Devils Lookout, 3500ft gain, in 3.5 hours. A respectable time even with 21st century ultralight gear.
