The dam was built in the late 1880s to raise the lake's water level for the hydraulic gold mining equipment many miles away. Emerald lake is at 5500 ft elevation. Sapphire Lake is in the next basin up, and Mirror Lake hangs on a shelf above Sapphire lake.
