Vintage 1970s Lowa Alpspitz Mountaineering boots

Mint condition Lowa Alpspitz boots made for mountaineering, climbing, crampons and extreme backpacking in the 1970s. I bought these 5-1/2 pound boots on ebay for my 2010 climb of Mt Rainier, and have broken them in with some local hikes. Built with full grain leather, triple stitched Norwegian boot welt, fine German craftsmanship, and freshly Sno-Sealed, they look and feel like new. A vintage Svea 123, and Chouinard-Frost wooden handled ice axe compliment these boots. The laminated bamboo handled Chouinards are really common place, but not the early wooden ones.

Bought mine in 10th grade, 1980. They still fit, and I still love them. A classic design for all times and made to last close to forever. They are best used in snow. Went up Mt. Whitney in them during summer and beat the crap out of my knees. But I looked cool ;-)

My '72 Lowa Civetta's (nearly the same, slightly heavier model) came from Hans at Colorado Boot and Shoe on Colfax St, Denver. He relined the heel quarter inside, and resoled them, and did a beautiful job. I wore them two weeks ago all day clearing some wind downed trees in Washington State. They brought back so many memories of summiting some of the Fourteeners in Colorado. And I still use my Optimus 100 camping, and my Optimus 99 hiking.

I bought my Lowa Alpspitz boots in 1968 and still have them. I have used them for general backpacking and for a short (five days) on the AT. Had a bad motorcycle accident which ended my use of the Alspitz boots. Took them out of storage last week and they are in very nice shap. Just need to be reconditioned. They look to be in great shape just need a little attention.
Yes, I have a Svea 123 which has been, well used, for 49 years, as needed. Great srove.

My Lowa Alpspitz boots which I bought in 1971 in Durango, Colorado is too worn down to use. They wait for me in the closet like an old faithful dog. When I put them on, like the red slippers, I am back putting the bolts in the face of a small direct aid climb near X rock. Doing a Tyrolian traverse with a one inch webbing diaper. Putting on the Sno-Seal with the Svea hissing in the dorm and then snow shoeing to get over snow and to build snow caves for the night. Sorry - I guess this is what old men do.

I just wore my circa 1978 Alpspitz's today on a snowy local trail. They're got several 1000 miles on them, been to the top of Mt. Rainier 3 times, been resoled poorly, and had the tongue rebuilt due to rodent damage. I have some stitching that needs to be replaced, but like Jeff have been told they can't be repaired because they were so well made.

I also have a 123R from 1978.

Bought my Lowas in '70 at 'Any Mountain' in Cupertino, CA for $135. I remember I had to soak them in water and wear them all day, every day, for 6 months to break them in.
Buried them with my German Sheppard a few years back. You know, so she'd have something to chew on when she got across that rainbow bridge. Must have had a few 1000 miles on them.

Sorry, last comment; actually bought in 1974!

Bought my pair in 1994 and wore them for more than 20 years (heavily). Always great, re-soled once and then the interior leather started wearing out. Took to two or three shoe repair places who could not reline the interiors as they were "so well made" they could not be taken apart to correctly fashion the repair. Alas, given to the Salvation Army... Yes, I too have a SVEA 123 bought at the same time that still works as it did new. I keep it polished and have a rebuild kit that I have never needed to use.

I still wear them for backpacking trips.
The handmade quality is unbeatable still in these days with modern boots.
This is what we call "classic goodies"

I owned a few pair myself throughout the 70's and were very well made. Although comfortable for their day (we even wore them on day hikes back then) boots have come a long way since then. I hate to admit it but I tossed out a dusty pair about ten years ago. I hope someone found them and put them to good use. Nice picture with the Svea!

wow, I recall these bad boys, that could take you just about anywhere in relative comfort. Can't find them like this today as they'd probably be crazy money. Once broken in, you could almost sleep upright in them. I had the same ice axe too. Nice!!!

Those were the boots I owned from 1973-1990. I too bought a replacement pair on ebay
