Route from Lake 11495 to Lake 10980 - Trapped! The Mike Turner Story

Wind River Mountains

Mike Turner, who had a story in Backpacker magazine, June 2002, became trapped in the rocks next to the small tarn in the lower right in early August 1998. He died 9 days later from dehydration, even though the lake was only 25ft away. Andy, his labrador dog, stayed with him the whole time, and was eventually found near Indian Pass. His body was discovered August 31. The rocks along the left shore of that tarn are all large on a 45degree slope, and very unstable! They constantly grinded, and hissed as I walked across them; it was very unnerving. Only after I crossed it, did I realize that this is where Mike died. One of the reasons I hiked this route in the Winds was to retrace Mike's final steps.
