I found this trail in an old Sierra Club Book, called "Hiking the Bigfoot Country" by John Hart (1975). He covered many trails within the Klamath Mountains, some I've hiked. But this one got stuck in my mind. I live in Happy Camp and the DDT is in my backyard, and I knew I had to try it. John hiked it in the early 1970s, and the trail hadn't been maintained for decades at that time. I figure it was built in the 1930s since it doesn't show on the 1922 topo. In 2008 the whole route burned in the big fires. I studied the book, the topos, Google Earth, 1944 black/white WW2 hi-res aerial photos, and the Dillon Divide with binocs hard. I first tried to hike it in 2010, but there was too much snow, and I really wanted to see some trail, so I wisely backed out across Red Hill. Late May 2012 proved to be a perfect window with a normal snow year. In John's book, he prefaced this route, "I've included this trail with some hesitation." I agree, and recommend that no one, except the totally insane adventurer even attempt it. My loop was 1/4 trail, and 3/4 cross country, and maybe 100yds of the original Dillon Divide Trail. The views are insane, and you will walk where no sane hiker has been in decades.
