Nepali Portraits

These images were taken during several trips to Nepal. Long after the spectacular mountain views began to fade from memory, it is the people's faces that I remember most.

The photos are really great, and you deserve a huge thanks from a nepali guy like me. We leave Nepal to earn some extra bucks, and you guys go to Nepal for humanitarian purpose. You have captured Nepal as it is, and I really appreciate your work. Thanks for the great job and keep it up. I see some comments here from Nepalese, such as Prakash, who has used some filthy language. This kind of creep exist in quite a large number in Nepal. They have a certain characteristics, such as, they dont take initiative to do good things for themselves or for their country, and when somebody is doing, they try to pull the legs! I hope he must have some other better purpose to live in this world and live other people do something better for Nepal. Jai Nepal.

Your work is really excellent but I couldnot see the real Nepal in the pictures. Real Nepal means the rural and remote areas of the country. Do visit to such places and take the photographs of those people and their way of life that could give the entire scenario of Nepal. I take your work as an innitial effort to recognise our country ,that is really priseworthy. I do hope that you will give continuity to your work of photography to explore Nepal.

Presented photographs are able to identiify what is the nepalese people and their cultures. I think these photographs are not amazing and wownderful because each pictures having reality and originalily. But attemption is wonderful because it is not easy to collect photographs from rural village where even monkey fall down from some places.

really amazing pictures..actually i'd never become interested in Nepal if i haven't fell in love with a Nepalese boy...he brought me the entirely different and amazing world.maybe it's too different so that we got to break up coz it's endless love..even though i still feel thankful and i've made my mind that one day i will go to Nepal,to see the amazing things he told me by my own eyes,and the city he grew up.

these pictures really warms my heart!! great to know there are so many fans of nepal, as least i wouldn't feel lonely among you guys.i'm an undergraduate of peking university studying as an exchange student in waseda univ. now.i made a short trip there in agu, 2005, and fell in love with the country...and a nepali man who is actually my first love. but he thought the only long-lasting relationship between us is brother-sister like friendship....well, need some time to adjust to my new role, but i guess i wont stop loving him and his country all my life.

He has invited us to visit his family. I would like to after seeing the pictures. My husband will take him on an intro scuba dive, I taught him how to use a lawnmower! And we have had great times together. He will be leaving for Montana soon. I am glad we got to know him. His name is Kamal Paudel . We call him Kamal from Nepal. Very humble and sincere young man.We live in Ala. and I wanted to make him feel at home... But more like his own home. He enjoyed the food we made. We are going to make Lamb Takari for him soon.

Astonishing photos! A single look at these says more than all the written books, amazing!

I am a young guy who is going to Katmandu in a short while to help a Nepali NGO (related to a Dutch foundation) to develop/ design a school. The main target of the school will be education, but we will also make it a 'green' building as we call it in Belgium and Holland. This means we will develop a school with sustainable energy sources (biogas, water heating by the sun, solar cooking, water filtering systems and hopefully solar energy).
During my stay in Katmandu (6 months) and my personal roundtrip afterwards (4 months) I will use an internet site to keep friends and family up to date.
My question to you is whether I could use some of your pictures to start my site, so my relatives can get an idea where I'm going. As it is for a voluntary organization, I do not have the ability to pay for them. I will not use them for any commercial meaning, just for my site and if you prefer I could create a link to your site. Hopefully you don't mind and let me know whether it's oké. Thanks very much. Hi, I am a news editor for an aid development magazine called Asian Development REview. I noticed your picture of the squater in Nepal and was wondering if we could use it for our magazine. We would give a full attribution for the image but cannot pay a monetary sum. It would appear as a full glossy pic in a nice-quality mag.
If we can use it we would need a copy forwarded to us as 300dpi of a fairly large size.
Please let me know if this is possible - it is for an article on foreign development aid being pulled out of Nepal because of the extortion by maoist rebels and decreasing security.

My teacher gave my class a research report to do on any country in the world. I chose Nepal, and wandered onto your site to get some research. I had read some books about Nepal already, and found the pictures that you have posted on your page very different than what daily life actually is in Nepal. Nepal is one of the 5 poorest countries in the world, and from what I saw in the pictures was very different. People in Nepals don't even have bathrooms, and 3 of 20 kids survive past the age of two because of the many dieses! I mean kids in Nepal die of diareah! Those pictures that I have viewed, have only been showing the good side of Nepal where people have enough money for decent items, which isn't even half of the population! I hope that you listen to my letter and show ALL of Nepal next time.

I knew this country just from the Geographie, what we lernt in school, but I traveled out of my country(Morocco) to continue my studies, and there I met a really beautiful girl from Népal. She´s now my girlfriend, and I wanted to have an idea about the beauty of her country, and it´s really unbelievable!!

The reason why I am asking is, I took some pictures in Nepal, some of which, I think, are pretty okay and I am considering to publish them. However they are people shots, I do not have model release. In that case, do you know if I am risking offending the laws by publishing the pictures which show the people (considering that the book is intended for sales)? Do you know what other photographers who take pictures of people--real people, not models, usually do?

I would appreciate it if you could kindly reply.

I have seen pictures of people of my country from all walks of life--but non as powerful or appealing to the eye as the one that is posted here in this gallery. Believe it or not my eyes were glued to each of these pictures for a good minute or two. I personally felt each one told a story! Wow! How do you get such revealing portraits? I love photos like these, but rarely get them, because I'm usually too shy to say anything, and as a result, the candid shots I get are usually disappointing (which is why I mostly stick to scenery!) I did a similar trip to Sikkim myself, its an amazing place as well, if you guys ever get an opportunity to go there, please do.. most parts of Sikkim are still untouched and some bits are pure Shangrilla...

If you`re travelling to Nepal, then I would advise your to get yourself a manual camera. you just can`t help yourself from taking the pictures of the natural scenaries there.

I feel so nice to see these pictures of our nation at your site. As you also had been to the spot, I assume you could feel the warmth of Nepali greetings and love for others. Actullay I am also from Nepal, and now studying here the undergraduate level in West Virginia, USA. I was missing the memories of home, so searched if I could find some thing on the search engines. So nice that your page was also reported. As I went through all the site, all the scence were appeared as real. Thanks for this job. I wonder if you had been to the central part of Nepal. I am from Chitwan, a plane Terain region in Nepal. Chitwan is mostly famous for it's national parks, and for being in the centre of the nation. Hey I would like to hear from you guys about some stuffs from there. Thanks agian, and not to mention you all look great in all those picts. Looking forward to hearing soon from you.

It's me again "Ron"! Have just been looking at your photos again, and can't help thinking they are a bit out of place, considering most other galleries...
Anyhow, I would like to know what sort of camera(s) you used. Was it digital material? I am still in traditional stuff myself, not even auto-focus, as I am so pleased with my Canon T90...
But I am wavering about going digital...
