D800 Test Shots

First day, first shots with my D800, using my walk-around 24-120 f4.0 lens in the morning; then in the evening I shot on a tripod using the f1.4 24,23, and 85mm lenses, plus a few with the 14-24f2.8. Incidentally, if you aren't familiar with PBase, you can choose to view in "large" which is how they will probably come up, or you can choose to view them in "original size" which will give you much more detail.

I'm on the waiting list for the 800. D8M_0073 has a lot of useful information for how big the dynamic range is of this camera. You've got sunlight splashing on white railing and red bricks and the camera not only resolved that easily, but you can also see tire treads in the shadows of the photo at the same time. Fantastic! The leaves against the sky are captured beautifully too. I think the tests revealed the D800 has just over 14 stops of DR and this is a good test photo to show it, thanks!

If you look at the young women on the dock, for example, it was almost completely dark when this was taken. But, it looks like there is a lot of light because of how the camera adjusts to the absence of light. So, yes it is grainy when looked at at original size. Now compare that to #99 for example, taken 45 minutes earlier when the light isn't so bad. Of course, as the light disappears and the ISO rating goes up, it produces more grain.

I won't argue for or defend anything here, they are what they are. They are shot with the best lenses and on a tripod so I don't think there is a "technique" issue.

Sorry but is it something at my end? Almost all the shots i viewed at original size were grainy and out of focus. I'm not seeing what others are seeing. Sorry Larry.

Looking at the originals, I am impressed with the minute details in the images and the sharpness/crispness. Have you done any sharpening in Camera RAW? With my old D300 I always used about 80% RAW sharpening.

Dov, I shot in RAW, lossless compressed, 14bit. And, all I did was to convert them to jpg and downsample somewhat so the files were to huge.

I am on the waitlist for the D800. already have the Nikkor 24-120 lens.
For the benefit of all the other pBase waiting for the D800 - can you tell us what format did you use? RAW , Lossless compressed 14 bit FX (36 x 24) ?
RAW , uncompressed 12 bit FX (36 x 24) ? RAW , uncompressed 14 bit FX (36 x 24) or else? Camera Raw version # ?
