Melk

Home of the Benedictines since 1089, its clifftop position above a river bend made it an ideal military camp which the Babenburgs took as their royal residence and stronghold in the 10th century. In 1548 a fire reduced the town to ashes and it was subsequently rebuilt in the Renaissance style
