World of Speed is a five-day event held every September on the Bonneville Salt Flats near
Wendover. I timed my trip to Moab to see it. Vehicles of many types race against the clock
in the hope of establishing new speed records. My interest was not in seeing speeding
cars---which are so far away that you don't get much sense of speed---but in examining
the event's infrastructure and experiencing the feeling of being on the salt.

In 2007, the best salt conditions were about three miles (4.5km) away from the access
road, so that's where the action was. Participants and observers had to drive that distance
on the salt just to reach the pit areas. The route was marked with traffic cones.
