Railroads

"I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a train." (Apologies to Joyce Kilmer.) Trains
excite me because of their efficiency, massiveness, and the sense of adventure they evoke. To be
close to a passing train is to approach nirvana: the sights, sounds, and vibrations are heavenly.
If I have to stop at a grade crossing to wait for a train to go by, I take it not as an impediment
to my perpetual motion in a car, but as another aspect of life to be savored.

I heard last night that a CSX train can carry one ton of freight over 400 miles on one gallon of fuel (for our metric friends, that converts to simply amazing). This was from a CSX commercial, but since truth in advertising laws you can always trust what you hear in commercials. What an intelligent way to haul freight.

Thanks for stopping by, Dave. Yes, I am in that 99.9% you mention, but no more after checking out the definitive volume of info you provide on your site. First I thought, 'he should write a book' - then I realized you already have! I live in a small AL town surrounded by two sets of tracks, North and East. I appreciate the charm of the whistles throughout the days&nights, the graffiti, the awesome 'organic patterning' (rust) and colorations and, now, this opp to learn more in-depth. Just a few miles from here is Irondale, AL where "The Whistle Stop Cafe" referenced by Fannie Flagg is located. It's a town where it's just impossible to ignore trains - the conductors still wave!
