End of Film Photography


After shooting color slides and black and white negatives for forty years, I went digital in late 2003 with a Nikon D100 and lenses left over from film photography: 20mm, 28-105 macro zoom, and 70-300 zoom.

These images document my transition from film to digital.

Wow. Great gallery. Now I'm scanning my bunches of color slides. Photoshop vs. the old enlarger. Miss the strange yellow light and the smell of chemicals? I think not.

Well, I guess I'm in the minority but I only started taking photos a year ago, and thus far I prefer film. I don't shoot as much as you do though -- so I get quick feedback because I can develop my own the night I shoot if I want to.

I shoot digital too but something about it just isn't as much fun. I guess it's the fact that the element of surprise has been totally eliminated with digital. I suppose if I shot for a living I might not want the romance. But I don't, so I do.

I love this historic review...I'm a digital child but I loved this sense when I was litle..There isn't anything the ps can do that a true master wouldn't....Just great..

This is great!!! I do miss it every now and then. The only film camera I have kept is my 8x10. The F3's & 4's, Blads, 4x5's... all gone.
This gallery tells a really nice story!!!

I tried to rekindle my interest in film a month or so ago but realized it was a fools errand and gave it up after only three rolls.

Only after I started scanning my negatives I realized how crappy my point and shoot cameras were. My best shots so far were taken by a Nikon FM2, manual focus and guestimating my exposures. Still I don't miss film at all, feedback takes weeks. Hard to learn from mistakes this way.

I think it is a sad period for photography. Nobody actually prints their digital shots--the days of flipping through photo albums will be over.

Why does this gallery make me feel slightly sad? Nostalgia? Not sure, but I LOVE this newfangled technology. This is a cool way to represent the "out with the old" sentiment.
