Ken and Carl Cut a Fallen Tree

Ken and Carl, volunteer trail maintainers, are also pictured here. They invited me
to watch them during their latest endeavor: cut up a fallen tree that was blocking
the trail in a local park. This meant that I had to get out of bed at the unnatural
hour of 8 a.m., as they were starting at 9. Photographers must endure hardships!

Cutting through the tree would release forces that could move it suddenly, so they planned
their work with this in mind. In one sequence of shots, note how the tree trunk rises as
Ken makes the initial through-cut. This lesson in physics was fascinating. They made quick
work of the obstruction, finishing in about 20 minutes.

Photos are arranged in the order in which they were taken.
