Start of hike on the backside of the mesa

Dewey, Utah view map

The only hope of getting to the top of Roberts Mesa was by finding a suitable route on its back (east) side. The topographic map showed a dirt road going around the back side on its way to a fording of the Dolores River. Near that river, the mesa sloped down to the level of the road, forming a gentle ramp that made for easy walking.

When I took this picture, it was hot as hell: the high 90s F. In spite of the heat, Joe Tripod, my photographic assistant, was unwavering in his support..

Dan, aren't you being a little unfair? For one thing, I don't have access to your Jeep, so I cannot take it with me on my hikes. In addition, my strength isn't what it used to be, so even if you gave me access to your Jeep, I would be unable to carry it on the trail. Getting older can be a pain.

Dave, I always take something with me on my hikes that you leave behind; my Jeep

Glad to hear Joe was not too hot to handle. Do you ride the bike much on your trips?

Another cool SP. Joe Tripod gets my vote for staying the course when the heat in on!
