Shoot-out at the OK Corral... 20060722_2655

Rattlesnake Lake (near North Bend, Washington)

Monte saw me aiming my D100 weapon at him and took that as a challenge to his photographic manhood. He quickly picked up his "big gun" (a Canon with a full-frame sensor) and returned fire. I was hit. After this shoot-out I accompanied him and his colleagues to an hour-long presentation about ultra-lightweight backpacking, where I learned a few things.

Did you read the book "I'm OK and you're Not? "

Did Ansel Adams do any digital work?

Ultralight Hiking?? Yes the one nice thing about Ultralight hiking , packing a 1 and a half pound tent. 2 oz. alcohol stove, runs shoes, etc. and having a base weight of less than 15 lbs. IS USing Your old frame pack to pack a 5 lb. camera ... Each 2 pounds I leave at home of gear allows me to pack 2 lbs. of a nice " L " lens.!! When I see an awesome sunset , I want 14MB's of RAW file eatting away at my CF card. (Not some 2 MB file from a matchbox Digibox camera.) Is the wieght of a camera worth it???? YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Backpacking authority?---no way. Because I am an old dog who is set in his ways, there is much opportunity for me to learn new ways. I let my brain be a sponge.

Lethal shot? I anticipated this type of encounter and came prepared wearing a Listorama Field Service Magnetic Anomaly Vest, which envelops the wearer in a coccoon of magnetic flux, offering the best protection money can buy. The downside is that I have to keep popping aspirin or ibuprofen to suppress a flux headache.

Large cameras forbidden? For a photo nut, one goal of ultra-light backpacking is to reduce the "survival weight" enough to justify carrying the "photo weight."

I believe that ultralight backpacking forbids the bringing of large cameras and lenses, but what do I know?

Your lucky to be alive Dave, a direct hit from a full frame Canon can be lethal! You must have been wearung your bullet proof Kevlar flower power shirt.

I don't believe for one minute that you learned anything about backpacking. You are the authority.
