Progress up the wash was steady and without difficulty until here, where the stream bed narrowed and the brush thickened. Ahead was a nightmare: the brush looked nearly impenetrable. I had no choice but to scramble onto the hillside above the stream bed, traverse past this brushy stretch, and hope that I could drop back into the stream bed where the going was more pleasant.
