My goal was to get to the faint purple rock bench barely visible on this side of the river,
opposite the sandbar. The route led to the right to a shelf, some zigzags, and another shelf
that eventually took me far to the right and into a canyon. Finding the way was great fun.
Near the top of the photo is a thin light horizontal
line: that's the bench on which Shafer Trail runs.
