The trail closely follows the level of the white rim seen here, except for the
shadowy area at right, where it is a little bit higher than the rim. This section
of the trail provided much excitement with its deadly drop-offs. As I drove slowly
down this "road" I heard a voice in my head saying "Stay focused. Eyes on the road.
Forget about the scenery. No guardrails. No room for error." I obeyed the voice.
The fallen blocks of white rim sandstone rock do not mean that the rim is fragile.
In fact, it is more resistant to weathering than the rock under it. Erosion of
the underlying rock allows pieces of the white rim to break off. The fact that
the white rim forms an expansive shelf is testimony to its durability.
