Most PBase offices are close to well-used transportation corridors. One exception
is the Newfoundland Basin office (NBO), situated in the middle of a huge mud/salt
flat in western Utah. The photo shows the only access route to the office.
You might wonder why PBase has an office there. It's simple: PBase
goes where the customers are.
This area, unusually remote, is visited by government types who survey land, analyze
salt content on the playa, service weather monitoring equipment, etc. Part of the
area is a bombing range; pilots drop in on occasion to see what's cooking and relax
between bombing runs (probably not officially sanctioned, but so far there have been
no demotions). One visitor, a PBase subscriber, has been to the top of nearby
Floating Island ( http://www.pbase.com/listorama/image/48651604 ). All of these
visitors share one goal: to surf the Web every chance they get; some do it while
on the job (names are being withheld to preserve the integrity of their employment).
So imagine you are hard at work in this God-forsaken environment, away from
family and friends for days or weeks at a time, and your modem fails or your
hard drive crashes. What to do? Go see the folks at PBase NBO, where you’ll
be treated like royalty while your equipment is repaired or upgraded.
While you wait for the fix, relax in the lobby and surf to your heart’s
content before returning to the stresses of serving your country. NBO
is equipped with triple-redundant doors and a clean-room air pressure
differential to keep fine particles of salt precipitate and
dried mud out of delicate electronic equipment.
